I'm in the market for some new clubs as well. I'm ok with the woods but I am looking for some new irons. The bigger and hybrid ones mentioned in here would be preferred. I top the ball a little too frequently for my taste. I would like to find longer clubs. I would rather go to a shop and hit with them first but I may not find a deal and therefore am looking at used sets online in case. My question is when the iron set refers to its length is that the measurement of the shaft before it reaches the actual iron or from the absolute bottom of the club to the top?

Also, if anyone else is looking around and stumbles upon an iron set - with a hybrid if possible that's under $150 I would appreciate a heads up. I don't want to make a big investment on clubs I haven't swung.

The Adams Idea irons I bought on eBay with a 4 hybrid cost me $99.95 shipped. I love how they feel, though I've only tried them on the range so far. If you can try them out somewhere, I'd do it. They're a bit older but mine look and feel great.

Just curious - how tall are you and do you know the length of your irons?

i shot a 93 a couple of weeks ago at the penn state course, which wasn't bad considering that i had 40 (!!) putts. i hit most of my clubs well and was knocking my mid-irons on the green all day, but my wedges sucked and my putting was complete piss. usually it's the other way around.

I'm 6'4", 6'5"ish. My clubs are the standard length, whatever that is. I used to top everything with my generic beginner clubs, but I'm getting pretty good lift with these.

Yeah, I came upon a chart that said generally being 6'1" or over +1 in. over standard length. I don't know how accurate that is - but I have to imagine with the clubs I'm seeing I'll get a lot of help from their lower center of gravity and MAXIMUM FORGIVENESS! Hah, I'd like to see a plus 1 set but I think standard should be fine - its probably more my swing and crappy clubs.

The length should refer to the distance from the end of the grip to the sole of the club, or more precisely, the point at which a line formed by the sole intersects the line formed by the shaft. Club length should not vary according to hosel length. Unfortunately, manufacturers seem to measure length differently. My Pings at 1/2 inch over standard are the same length as my new Taylor Made irons, although the Pings measure 38.25" while the Taylor Mades measure 38" according to the manufacturer.

Perhaps a more important measure is lie angle. Lie angle is an important component of fitting. That is the angle between the line formed by the sole and the line formed by the shaft. Lie angle is another measure that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

So is lie angle basically your trajectory? If I'm looking for something to help me get the ball in the air am I looking for a higher lie angle? Perhaps some degree above standard?

Ok, so for Fathers day, I bout a Taylormade R7 driver with moveable weight technology. I have it draw weighted right now, and it's really helping me get my wrists to roll over and keep my drives in the fairway. I didn't miss a drive more than a couple of feet this weekend.

I also just this past week finally got new irons. I'd been playing with a whole set from Walmart that I'd bought back in 1998, so I was due for an upgrade.

I bought a set of irons from Pinemeadow Golf. They are Taylormade clones, and they rock. I was swinging very easy as I was getting used to them this weekend, and was hitting about the same distances I could hit while swinging hard with my other clubs. I was making much, MUCH better and more consistent contact. The clubs have more weight at the club head as opposed to my old set which felt way light. The weight helped me hit down on the ball a lot better, and my misses were a lot closer. I tend to top the ball frequently, and I only topped once or twice the whole round. (9 holes)

I would've blown away my old scoring record if I had putted worth a damn. 2 and 3 putts killed me. I had 20+ putts on 9 holes...ouch. Don't think I can sell my wife on a new putter though..heh.

The hybrids I'm not totally sure about yet. I got 3-4-5 hybrids. I'm totally not used to them yet, so I'll let you know what I think of them after a couple more rounds...(I'm playing a few times this week.)

Sounds like a lesson or two would be better than new clubs. If you're topping the ball that's usually because you're either standing too far from the ball or your swing is too long. Having another pair of eyes look at your posture might help a lot. A shorter, more compact swing should help you make more solid contact.

Ah I'm not looking for a lesson. Its not like this is the most important thing to me - I want to self teach myself and if I get help I want it to be free. I can get the ball in the air regularly its just that I find it to be an uncomfortable swing. I also get a lot of drag cause I dig in often to get the ball up. So i decided to swing at the driving range the way I felt most comfortable and I was making strong contact but just topping it. The way I see it moving away from my beginner clubs and perhaps adding an inch of length will do wonders - at least I'm willing to invest $150 on this theory. Once I play for a month I'll get lessons in the hope of learning to do more with the ball - as in how to better spin it, type of shots, etc.

Do the prices for clubs on ebay usually skyrocket before the end of the bid? I'm looking for a new sand wedge and there are a bunch with no bids over .99 (plus $10-12 shipping) and bidding ends tomorrow.

Definitely. A couple sets I was thinking of pulling the trigger on flew out of my price range already. Just know what you want to pay and bid it as your max. If you lose so be it you will find something else.

i'm using the same clubs i used in highs school, meaning they're at least 15 years old and probably close to 20. they all have their original grips on them, which isn't good. but golf clubs are expensive and usually when i hit a lousy shot it's my own fault and not the fault of my clubs.

Regripping clubs is cheap.

Bad grips make ball striking quite a bit more difficult. Good grips do indeed make a huge difference, not just in stability, but comfort. If you are thinking about the club slipping even before you swing, it takes a toll.

If you are self-teaching, I would suggest getting clubs that fit you well - otherwise you are going to develop a lot of terrible habits by correcting for the ill-fitting clubs. When you stand about to hit, the club should be lieing flat to attain the proper angle for that club. Correcting the lie angle will place you the correct distance from the ball.

Well after looking on ebay for hours last night and some today...I watched a whole bunch of clubs exceed my budget. So I followed the Pine Meadow site someone posted earlier and started researching the clones. I pulled the trigger on the Callaway X-18 knockoffs - http://www.pinemeadowgolf.com/golf-clubs/irons/irons.i9199e.html

If anyone cares I'll post a review after I get a round in.

Sweet...I'll be curious to hear what you think!

I just ordered these last week off of Ebay. They are Taylor Made knockoffs. I think they'll be better than my old used set. I'll keep you posted. The price is pretty good.

By my calculations, they should arrive today, which is good because I have a 3pm tee time today.

I'm not sure how I missed this when I posted last. When I golfed 9 holes the other day I had some fantastic shots. Great chips and a couple approaches on the green from about 150 yards. I still topped the ball a good 5-6 times. When I purchased those new clubs I followed the advice of that sizing chart and got them at +1. I'm about 6'2" with shoes on and so I should be able to have the club flat and swing comfortably with relative ease.

This is my 3rd in a row it looks like. Did you order that iron set yet? I'm just curious as to how long it will take for them to get here.
