any opinions? I am looking to buy new irons and woods since I am playing enough now to be worth the investment. I saw saw Nike slingshot irons on sale - any one use these? I don't want to spend $1000 on irons so budget is an issue. Edited by stitchface

I'd avoid the slingshots. They are huge. And that's probably why they flopped so bad. They are horrible to look at and really clunky. Bigger is more forgiving, but if its too big to enable a solid strike, then it defeats the point. Slingshots were a bigtime flop for Nike.

Personally, I'd avoid Nike clubs, especially if you are an average or worse player. They used to make crappy clubs and relied on Tiger to sell them (Tiger does not use any Nike clubs that you can buy in any store, btw). Now, their clubs are okay, but their forged irons are good for expert players and their woods are just OK- plenty better out there.

Look on ebay. You can get plenty of good iron sets for $300 or so. Try looking at the following: Taylor Made Rac OS, Taylor Made 320, Taylor Made 360, Ping G2, Ping I3, Callaway X 18, Callaway X 16. All these sets are 1-3 year old models and are every bit as good as current iron sets, and all are forgiving for the average player. All were in the $500+ range when they were current. And all blow away the Slinghots, IMO. I wouldn't go near the slingshots, personally. They have to be the ugliest clubs I've ever seen at address. Yuck.

As far as woods go, check out Taylor Made, Callaway, Ping. All better than Nike, IMO.

Eh, I like their woods. I play with Nike woods and Taylor Made irons.

As for the slingshots, they are kind of ugly. A friend of mine had a set and let me hit them, and I found them to be very easy to strike the ball solidly with, but hard to work the ball with as well. Maybe good for a beginner, imo.

That looks like a good idea. I am now considering Adams clubs instead after reading a little more. Ugliness isn't really a big factor to me though.

If you have a golfgalaxy near your they have pretty good prices as well.

I don't think we have one of those - in fact, there don't seem to be any golf stores around other than at the courses. San Diego we are not. But, most of these places seem to offer free or at least cheap shipping.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread, stitchface, but I figure I'd just post this here instead of creating a new thread.

I'm looking to purchase a new set of irons this summer. I've played a lot, but I'm not good. I'm still using the same crappy beginner's clubs I've had since forever, so I figured it's time to upgrade. I'm looking for something that'll help me get the ball in the air better (that's probably my biggest struggle with my iron game) and something that will be forgiving when I don't hit the sweet spot. I'm not looking to break the bank, especially since I'm still mostly a beginner and I'm not very good, but I'll probably get a used set off eBay or something, so I'm hoping I can still get a good quality set that will last me awhile for a reasonable price. If you guys have any suggestions that'd be great.

Your probably going to want something fairly well offset, maybe even with a hybrid for the 3 and 4 irons would be my guess though I am nowhere near an expert. This might be similar to what Stitch was looking at.

I'm sure they are forgiving. I was referrring to the clunkiness factor. To many people, clunky irons prevent solid contact, particularly beginners. The slingshots are some of the clunkiest irons I've ever seen.

I caught that part. I am now thinking of the Adams Idea A3s - I think what I will do is go try a bunch, pick a few I like, and then look for the best deal.

Sounds like you are in the same place as me - we should go play a round!

True, I really don't care for the hybrid clubs as I think they prevent from learning how to properly hit the long irons which are the most difficult clubs for most every golfer and I hate using 90% of the time. When looking at macho I would be more concerned about the ball getting off the ground than what club I used to do that :-).

but nobody needs to learn how to use long irons now that hybrids exist.

Well, just won a set of 4-PW Adams Idea irons off eBay for $80 + 19.95 s/h. The 4 is a hybrid. I'm pretty excited to try them out.

Anyone have any other suggestions for drivers or wedges that'd help me? I've heard good things about the Taylor Made 200 series driver and thought about checking that out. I've just got a cheap John Daly driver now. When I hit it good it feels and sounds good, but it's so light that half the time I feel that I don't have any control over it. Thinking about going a bit smaller and heavier to help me maintain my control.

I'm in the market for some new irons as well. I love the Callaway irons and would love to get a set of fusion wide soles. If you're interested in Callaway, they sell pre-owned clubs. I have bought from them in the past and have enjoyed what I got. It doesn't offend me at all to get used clubs and avoid having to pay SRP. You can find them at Callawaypreowned.com

You might have a hard time finding a good, smaller driver. If you can afford a Taylor Made driver, it's hard to go wrong. I would buy a TM, but I hit my Nike too well to justify spending on a different one.

Take the money you were going to spend on a new driver and spend it on a couple of lessons instead. Of course it's going to mean trusting that the PGA pro knows what he's talking about and actually doing what he says but in the long run it will be worth it.

If lessons are are not a viable option, trying shortening your backswing. This will make your swing more compact and give you more control. Don't worry about a loss of power since making more solid contact will be much better than any loss of distance.

Why isn't their a stickied Golf thread?

I'm a guy who has typically been able to drive the ball pretty straight with older models of drivers but a huge drive for me was 260-270. I switched to a Taylor Made R580XD about 2 years ago and started absolutely crushing the ball. I'm now consistently driving the ball 260-270 with a much more regular sprinkling of 280-290 yard drives than I was getting the 260-270 with the older clubs. I've hit a bunch of different drivers and Taylor Made seems to be the most forgiving and have the best feel for me.

By the way, I bought my driver off of Ebay with a custom graphite shaft for $85 including shipping.

If you're looking for irons, I play with a set of Callaway X-18 knock offs that I bought for $160 online. Not much difference between the real ones and the fakes if you ask me, at least for a guy who plays 3-4 times a month. If you're a great golfer, you'll notice a difference.

That's not a bad suggestion. I hit a set of X-12 knock offs. I wouldn't trade the pitching wedge from that set for anything but would like some newer clubs from the 3-9 irons. Considering that I plan on average twice a week I can try to justify it.

best thing you could do is find a demo day at a local course or hit up Nevada Bob's, they typically have an indoor demo facility where you can try any set of clubs....i wouldn't buy anything that i haven't hit.

also, after you make your purchase...do yourself a favor and get the clubs fitted, you'll be amazed at what a difference having clubs that actually fit you makes.
