So long as we're looking for a lefty corner outfielder that's a big masher and a defensive liability, I'm contractually obligated to remind all of you that Barry Bonds remains a free agent.

Uh, what? You won't include Pie in a deal for Dunn?

Junior and Dunn both have "free agent after the season" written all over them. Both are most likely going to be rent-a-players.

No I wouldn't. I know Dunn is phenominal masher, but he's a DH playing the field, much like Carlos Lee. I still value defense over offense, over the course of a season. Plus when you take into account the fact that either Soriano or Dunn would be moved to RF, with Fuku moved to CF, I don't Dunn's offense, makes up for as bad that OF defense would be.

Give me Milton Bradley.

so for a left-fielder their defense is more valuable than their offense? huh?

That didn't make much sense either. Dunn has improved on his defense greatly the last two years as well.

Granted, he has an arm that Juan Pierre would be proud of.

What I mean is....I value defense moreso then offense. I am believer in the hitting wins games, but pitching and defense wins championship school of thought. I just don't believe Dunn is good enough a masher to warrant having to "hold your breathe" every time a fly ball is hit his way. Now, if the Cubs didn't have Derrek Lee at 1st, I would love to have Dunn at 1st base, but in the OF, I prefer players who are defensively capable. That's why I prefer Bradley to Dunn. Bradley will give you a line similar to his careers #'s of .274/.360/.441 and anywhere from 10-20 homeruns, 15-35 doubles, and the ability to play good defense. The Cubs don't necessarily need another masher, what the need is another good hitter, which Bradley is.

Just a quick back of the napkin calculation here...

Dunn to LF, Sori to RF, Fukudome to CF...

LF is gonna cost us probably 10 runs. (From Sori to Dunn)

RF is gonna cost us probably 5 runs. (From Fukudome to Sori)

CF is gonna cost us probably 15 runs. (From Pie to Fukudome)

I feel I'm generally being conservative with those estimates... and that leaves us to the point where Dunn would have to create an extra 30 runs with the bat, and probably another 5 to account for the difference in their baserunning prowess.

Could Dunn do it? I'd say that he probably could.

Is it worth giving up the talent to find out? Probably not... not unless we're pretty damn sure he's gonna be necessary to let us have a chance to squeak into the playoffs. I'd be plenty happy if Lou would just stop wasting our time with Johnson in CF versus righties.

Let's sign Bonds, trade for Griffey and Dunn, and put Soriano back at 2B. Bonds in LF, Griffey in CF, Dunn in RF, and Soriano at 2B would have to be the worst defensive team in the history of MLB.

you know who i would hate to have in LF? Ryan braun. his defense. UGH

Better than his defense at 3B though, probably by a couple wins.

If we still had Pierre or some other butcher in CF, then I'd be concerned bout Dunns defense in our OF. With Pie, I could accept his shortcomings even more, and his offense gives more cushion to allow Pie to develop. Maybe Pie would learn to take more pitches from him.

Except Dunn replaces Pie in this scenario (with some defensive changes thrown in), because he isn't going to be replacing Soriano or Fukudome.

I don't believe this for a second, but I thought I'd quote it anyway.

Question of the Week

Q Do you think the Reds are going to trade Griffey and Dunn? And if so, to what teams? — Geoff, Dayton

A Do you mean now, or ever? Right now? Doubt it. If the teams starts winning, probably no trades. If not, well, who do you think would want a 38-year-old outfielder with bad knees making $12.5 million. Seattle? Maybe. Dunn might go at the trade deadline (if the team isn't winning and he doesn't come alive — as he usually does). Cubs GM Jim Hendry loves Dunn and Houston would like to bring him home where he could also quarterback the Houston Texans.
