it's 2-2 now but it's pretty obvious to any philly sports fan how this game will end. the "horn-horn-horn, let's go caps" thing is hilariously lame. let's pipe this in because our fans don't really know when to cheer.

 

oh well, the cubs are playing good baseball now!

 

Game 5 the Let's Go Caps was so annoying. Keep it to after goals if they need to have it, not every two minutes.

the second goal was arguable - it's either interference if you think the flyer player pushed the goalie into the goalie, or a no call and a good goal. as for the game winning goal, if you don't think that was a tripping penalty, then you're basically saying the referees shouldn't call penalties in playoff overtime.

Barry Melrose said it was a good no-call, so it probably should have been called something.

 

I do believe it was a penalty and should have been called. My problem was this. There were about 4 penalties in the last couple of minutes of regulation. Why werent any of those called? This is a issue that has always bothered my about the NHL. Just call the penalties at all times and there will never be controversy. What is even worse is if the Caps would have killed off the penalty, there probably would have been something called against the Flyers within a couple of minutes to even the PPs.

my guess is that they called it because the caps had blatantly tripped kapanen a minute earlier, and the refs had let it go. probably their way of saying "we'll let you play to some extent, but if you're going to keep taking obvious penalties we're going to have to call it eventually."

 

and count me in the camp that still wants penalties called in overtime. do you want the refs to decide the game? no. do you want the NHL to turn back the clock 10 years and be played like a game of tackle football? no thanks, that's boring and stupid.

Penguins vs Senators - Pens in 5 - right result, but went a game shorter

Capitals vs. Flyers - Flyers in 6 - right result, but went a game longer

Devils vs. Rangers - Devils in 7 - wrong result, two games shorter

 

West

 

Red Wings vs. Predators - Wings in 5 - right result, went a game longer

Sharks vs. Flames - Sharks in 6 - right result, went a game longer

Wild vs. Avalanche - Wild in 6 - wrong result, right series length

Ducks vs. Stars - Ducks in 7 - wrong result, two games shorter

 

so i was in the ballpark, except for the 4/5 games.

 

My second round picks:

 

I think the Habs will top the Flyers in 6 or 7 (previously I had 5, but I am not quite as pessimistic now). I think the Pens will get rid of the Rangers in 6 games.

 

In the West, I think Detroit doesn't have too much trouble with Colorado, and puts them out in 5 or 6. The Stars will push the Sharks to 6 or 7 games but I am sticking with the Sharks in that one.

upshall got popped in the face two times by hamrlik twice and knocked to the ice both times. i'm pretty sure the refs aren't going to call a penalty on montreal unless someone pulls out a knife and stabs a flyer. oh well, that's the canadien home ice advantage.

when you play in montreal, you have to be the habs, their fans and the refs. always been like that, always will.

 

still, good teams don't continually blow 2 goal leads. if we lose game 2 you can pretty much just stick a fork in us, we'll probably be swept or win a game at most.

not NHL, but the flyers' and devils' minor league affiliates have played a ridiculous series in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. Game five was decided on

in the 5th overtime; the albany goalie (former blackhawk michael leighton) made 99 saves in the game (!!!) There was a nice line brawl early in the series; today's game six was won 1-0 in OT by albany, forcing a game seven. Btw, the d-man that set up the goal is extremely gifted offensively and is apparently awful defensively; here's his

. If he can ever become decent defensively, he'll be fun to watch.

 

In other playoff news of interest to me, future top-six forward claude giroux is putting up pee-wee numbers for gatineau in the QMJHL playoffs: 14 games, 12 goals, 25 assists, 37 points, +26. next-highest player has 26 points. giroux is going to be awesome for us in the next few years, the future is bright (if we get a real coach).

and there's a goal right away, our 947th too many men on the ice penalty gives montreal a PP, then carter takes an idiotic penalty after stoppage in play for a 5-on-3. seriously, well-coached teams do not do these things, especially in the playoffs.
