Wow! The Cardinals look terrible! They had better hope Pujols stays healthy. And not even to mention their pitching...

Most of the lineup is going to be bad, but 2-3-4-5 is going to be very very good.

You sound awfully sure that Duncan and Ankiel can come close to repeating last year's production. I don't see it happening

I actually expect nothing special out of Ankiel. I don't think he's going to be bad, but not nearly as good as some of my fellow Cards fans think. Maybe league average. I don't really see any reason to doubt Duncan and his career .884 OPS though. And last year was actually a down year. He had on OPS of .927 until he got the sports hernia. As long as he's healthy he's a very good hitter.

Even if they do, nobody with a .328 OBP is very very good.

I take it you're not a Soriano fan.

Nope. He's a decent enough complimentary player though. And hopefully he'll be closer to the .340 OBP area for at least a little while.

Fair enough. And FWIW, I'm hoping for the Cards 2-5 to be Barton, Pujols, Duncan, Glaus.

It really sucks that our highest paid player (who just happens to be locked up longer than anybody else on the team) can be accurately referred to as a "decent enough complimentary player."

that's not true at all; nobody with an eqa around .290 to .300 is a "decent enough complimentary player." that more accurately describes a guy like matt murton (.270-.275 eqa.) plus soriano is a good fielder, and murton is average at best. i agree that soriano is not the superstar that he is made out to be, but his offensive value is not far off from aramis ramirez, who i don't think anyone considers to be a "decent enough complimentary player."

The point of the description was he better not be your stud. It's fine to have such a dangerous, yet highly flawed player as your 3rd or 4th best hitter. If he's your marquee guy though, you did a horrible job building your team.

My original point is that Ankiel's numbers last year were not "very very good". They are complimentary numbers. Soriano is a better version of that complimentary hitter.

Well, he might be our 3rd best hitter. Def not 4th, but I sure wish he was 3rd by a wider margin, at least.

we'll see what happens, but I hope Fukudome ends up being our 3rd best, and not because of a Soriano regression or injury. I'm going to homer for Fukudome all season. i know, i know, SPRING TRAINING, but i just am totally in love with what i've seen so far.

I'm not in love, but I too hope that Fukudome is good enough to be better than Soriano, because Soriano just isn't that good.

Eh. In my mind, Sori is a far far better bet to put up a ~.900 OPS, which is pretty damn good (though I'm not a huge fan of how he does it), than Fukudome.

I do love Kosuke's approach at the plate, though.

Not all OPS are created equal, as the one with better OBP is worth more. Add to that the likelihood that Soriano will get himself picked off far more frequently, and I'm thinking Fukudome could outproduce him. That's also why I say 3rd or 4th best hitter. We don't know what either will do this year.

Very Very Good, Eh? How then does a 2-3-4-5 of Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome look to you? The only one of those were the Cardinals are better would be potentially needing surgery. And if "most of the lineup is going to be bad," how then can EXACTLY HALF of the everyday players be described as very very good?

The Cubs 2-5 also look very very good, no doubt. Most of the lineup is going to be bad even though half of it is going to be very very good is because contrary to popular belief, in the National League, the pitcher still has to bat. That would make 5 of the 9 hitters in the lineup bad.

This is comical in many ways. I guess I should expect this from a team who bats the pitcher 8th. But I especially love the marriage to the second and totally unnecessary "very."

Starting a sentence with a conjunction and the unnecessary "totally?" Lay low for awhile because the other Grammar Police Department officers might be looking for you.
