PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Cesar Izturis has more errors than hits this spring, not exactly a mark of distinction for the St. Louis Cardinals' new shortstop.

But Tony La Russa has been steadfast in his support. The questions come daily, and the manager keeps repeating that he's confident Izturis, who hasn't been a regular the last two seasons, is the right man for the job.

"I don't in any way, shape or form think Cesar Izturis is fighting it this spring," La Russa said Saturday. "He's showing everything defensively we want to see."

LaRussa, Yost and Baker have been riots this offseason so far.

FORT LAUDERDALE — Cesar Izturis is the Cardinals starting shortstop and short of a catastrophic conclusion to what’s been a slow spring, he’ll continue to be the Cardinals starting shortstop right up until and after Opening Day.

The numbers say competition. The Cardinals say otherwise.

Izturis, who has two hits in his first three at-bats today against Baltimore, entered the game with more errors in the field (six) than hits at the plate (five). Contrast that with Brendan Ryan’s offensive pep, his .366 on-base percentage and his thriving in the No. 9 — as well as anyone, really — and it would seem that the second-year infielder is making a push to foil the veteran Izturis’ comeback as an everyday player.

Not so fast, manager Tony La Russa said this morning.

Ryan and Izturis were both on the trip to face Baltimore today, though Ryan was a late scratch from the bench because of a sore ribcage muscle. Izturis made the start and continued what La Russa has described as consistent improvement. It’s fair to question Izturis’ play, La Russa agreed, but not to question his place on the team.

I was getting a mtn. dew in the law building just before class when I overheard some knucklehead lauding Tony LaRussa's stick-to-it-ness re: Izturis as the starting SS. I briefly considered slapping him but just chuckled as I walked off to class.

I am sure Izturis will probably be in the All Star game now that he is playing in St. Louis. Doesn't that always happen to mediocre infielders in St. Louis?

Izturis is no longer the number one LaRussa concern. Any replacement available at SS sucks comparably. Concern number one is Skip Schumacker over Brian Barton.

what are you concerned about? your guys are 5-1

I'd mock, but then I remember who the Cubs ae starting at SS.

a better player for about $2.5M less?

Agreed. If this is a Theriot vs Izturis discussion, then it's going to be a very short discussion. If it's playing a crappy SS when there's a better inhouse option, that might be more valid. Other than sailing the throw over DLee's head yesterday, Cedeno hasn't looked lost like he had last year. Not that I'd be ready to hand him the job, but he's not looking like a deer caught in the headlights, which is big for him.

Actualy, it's just another reason to hate Izturius...he's so bad, he makes another bad player, Theriot, look much better in comparison, so Izturius tricked Lou and Hendry into thinking that SS was fine once he was dumped.

I was super drunk at a party at EIU last weekend. There was a guy there wearing a cards hat and he was satisfied with the decision to send Rasmus to the minors because he thought Skip Schumaker is a good player.

i had a similar experience when talking to a cards fan before the season started...he told me that they should win the division because their outfield is much improved and having a full season with a "real shortstop" would really help them......i didn't even bother going any further into the subject of baseball with him.

That reminds of this party I went to at UF about a year ago where I was talking to a kid with a Cards hat on who kept calling Albert Pujols "Alfred Pujols". At first I thought I misunderstood him but he kept saying it. I don't think that kid was even drunk either. I was though.
