Its been worse...much much worse.

I have a desk calendar that has a different "Cubs fact" every day...today was the following:

Fact:

In 1981, the shortstop-second base combination for the cdus teamed up to hit a combined .196 with 5 home runs and 39 RBI.

Their obp was in the .260s....

Wowsers

Can you name them? (I got one without looking...)

Was one Ivan DeJesus (is that who was sent to the Phillies for Sandberg)?

yes, he was at SS

2B was a circle jerk of suck that year (Mike Tyson, Pat Tabler, Steve Dillard, and a couple of other schmoes)

EDIT -- the strike couldn't have come at a better time, that team was beyond brutal

I always thought Tabler was going to be a very good player.

That's the one I was able to name off the top of my head as well...I though that was pretty good considering I was 5 for most of the 1981 season.

I have the same calendar. Just out of curiosity, was yours messed up for the entire month of Feb? Mine was missing days, days out of order etc.

Yeah, I got it, and I was -3. Isn't Ivan a coach now?

Just about every team in MLB had a sucky SS in 1981. It was okay to have someone like Ivan DeJesus playing SS when you consider the three All Star SS's in 1981 were Dave Concepcion, Ozzie Smith and Manny Trillo.

Nowadays, there are good power hitting SS's. Teams with a decent sized payroll typically have a SS with a good to above average bat.

Cubs? Hendry is living in 1981.

Nope...just fine. Now of course I was messed up for the entire month of February but that's a different story.

What makes that quote funnier is imagining Maddux saying it.

You could just about say the same thing about 2nd baseman from that era too.

I remember thinking " yes, got rid of DeJesus and got Bowa" didn't have a clue who Sandberg was. Pretty decent trade.

In the Cubs division winning season of '84 Bowa put up an awesome line of .223 BA, .274 OBP, .269 SLG. Ouch. Imagine how good their offense could have been without that black hole.

But can you believe that in '81 DeJesus had a line of .194 BA, .276 OBP, .233 SLG and the Cubs still gave him 401 at bats? And then the Phillies were so impressed that in the offseason they traded for him and threw in Sandberg to sweeten the deal.

Yikes.
