Looking at Juan Uribe?

According to The Score, scouts of the O's are watching Juan Uribe of the Pale Hose, in case the Brian Roberts goes through to us. If the Roberts deal drags on, would there be interest in dealing for Uribe for our SS? I know that he's a hacker and his OBP is probably less than Theriot, but he has 20 HR power and can field. He just signed a one year deal for $4.5-5 million.

 

The White Sox are looking for an experienced pitcher for the end of the rotation.

Uribe can definitely field, but he gets pretty lazy out there. He'd probably post an OPS a bit higher than Riot, but it's just not worth it.

I'm not sold on Uribe as an improvement over Theriot.

 

In 2007, Uribe's OPS+ was 74; Theriot was 72.

 

In 2006, Uribe had an OPS+ of 73, and in 2005 it was 85. He might be an improvement, but it isn't a significant enough to warrant making a trade for him.

 

Trading for Uribe would be a trade for a player who is very equal in value, yet derives his value by a different type of player than Theriot.

Hell, even with a .326 Ob% for Theriot - he scored 80 runs. His batting average would be better than Uribe's.

someone mentioned that uribe was a +18 glove last year and theriot was a -6, right? i'm assuming that people weren't only talking about their batting abilities and completely ignoring the fact that they play the most important defensive position on the field.

I would take Uribe over Theriot if those were the only choices. I would also hope they'd eat at least half his salary and take only a Cintron-type player in return.
