None of this makes sense unless someone above Sabean ordered him to change course and start rebuilding. The Rowand and Vizquel contracts were not the moves of a GM who was looking to rebuild. If upper management is really so disenchanted with Sabean's direction they ought to bring in a new GM.

If I was a Giants fan, I think I'd have a tough time dealing with the mess they are in right now. Think I'd rather be a Pirates fan.

The Rowand contract is particularly bad because he'll be declining by the time the Giants are competitive again, and he'll also be getting $12M annually. That was a nonsensical move for a rebuilding team. Upper management should have stopped that deal.
