“A long-term contract with Khalil at this time is probably doubtful,” said Towers. “I don't know, it might not be able to get done. Khalil's family is on the East Coast and I think there are some health concerns.

“With Khalil, it might have nothing to do with the money. It might be family.” Greene could not be reached for comment.

“We explored a longer contract with Greene's agent (Mike Milchin) the last couple of weeks,” said General Manager Kevin Towers. “We approached them, they never approached us.

“But we heard back that they weren't interested in what we proposed.”

The Padres' offer was for three or four seasons.

After hitting .254 with career highs of 27 homers, 97 RBI and 153 games played, the strong-fielding Greene is seeking close to $5 million in arbitration. The club's offer is an estimated $1 million less.

Get it done Jim. We'll pay him that extra 1 million.

I'm in full agreement with the last two posts.

Did anyone know that we actually drafted Greene before he decided to return to Clemson?

" Greene was drafted with the second pick of the fourteenth round (409th overall) by the Chicago Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals would have drafted him if he would play catcher, but, Greene returned to Clemson the next year.

I was in line to get a question in (was going to be about the center field position over the next couple years given that the two top prospects in the organization play center field, and with a huge financial/years commitment to the corner outfielders, what will be the organization's plan in getting them to either play, or to allocate them for other pieces (as I was pondering this question, I thought of Meph's plan about Pie for Greene and that's when it hit me that it would be a wise deal for the Cubs to make. Took me awhile. Sorry Meph.

I did. There are a few guys we drafted and didn't sign and have become decent on another team, or at least killed us when they played us. Micah Owings comes to mind.

I think I would cream my pants if we landed Greene and didn't give up too much.

There's also that Lincecum kid in San Fransisco that the Cubs drafted but didn't sign. He turned out to be a pretty good pitcher. I think he was a 48th round pick or something like that.

Well, ya know........

If Hendry didn't quickly help Jacque Jones leave town, we might have been able to swing a deal with San Diego that helped them fill their hole in LF. Jacque Jones grew up in San Diego.

So, imagine if you will, a deal that sent Jacque Jones, Ronny Cedeno and say Eric Patterson to San Diego for Khalil Greene. Jones' contract was right up San Diego's alley. It's also a place where Jones could likely get an extension. As it is, he's likely a 4th outfielder in Detroit, especially when Sheffield is DHing. Patterson could get a year in AAA to be ready to play CF when Edmunds breaks down. Cedeno slides into their hole at SS.

But, ya know what? Hendry won't even be interested in Greene. He's not a top of the order hitter and he isn't a speedy lefty hitter. I'd guess Hendry is more enamored with Theriot than he would be with Greene. Greene would have a ball hitting balls out of the small parks in the NL Central.

I say work a deal for Greene anyway. I'd take Soriano and DeRosa hitting 1/2 in the line up all day long knowing we have Greene towards the bottom of the order with Pie and Soto.

You can do that with several teams. Other notables the Cubs drafted: Micah Owings, Adam Everett, Jeff Larish, Taylor Teagarden, Landon Powell, Eli Iorg

The Orioles Hangout site is talking about Greene because he wants to be on the East coast. The Cubs need a SS more than a 2B, but maybe a deal could be worked with the 3 teams to send Roberts to the Cubs and Greene to the Orioles.

Padres get: Cedeno, Murton, Patterson

Orioles get: Greene, Headley, Marshall

Cubs get: Roberts, Payton, plus cash

Follow it up with the Dempster, DeRosa, ???? for Burnett.

Roberts leads off and pushes Soriano down in the order. Payton backs up all 3 OF positions. Rotation would be Zambrano, Burnett, Lilly, Hill, Marquis/Gallagher/Hart.

That trade is way too good for the Orioles. And besides, Angelos would reject it.
