According to the St. Petersburg Times, Carlos Pena and the Devil Rays have agreed to terms on a three-year contract worth approximately $24 million.

The deal buys out two seasons of arbitration eligibility and one season of free agency, giving Pena some long-awaited job security. Pena set a team record with 46 homers and 121 RBI in 2007, winning the AL Comeback Player of the Year award one year after being let go by both the Red Sox and Yankees. He figured to make between $6 million and $8 million in arbitration for 2008, so the other two seasons of the three-year deal are very reasonable for the Rays even if he predictably comes back down to earth a bit.

has to be one of the biggest contracts in D-Ray history, right? where does it rank among the vaunted deals given to Boggs, Canseco, Navarro or Trachsel?

Wow, that's an absolute steal.

Amazing that a guy coming off a 46/121 season will make $1m more per year than Marquis. I'm surprised Boras acquiesced to such a small figure.

It's a nice deal for the Rays, but Pena and Marquis aren't comparable service time wise. Pena was Rays property as long as they tendered him an offer.

Come on....He's getting bought out of a year of free agency. The Devil Rays controlled him for 2008 and 2009 before this deal. He has a hair over four years service time. If you want to be like me, you need to know these things.

They'll pay him less than he'd make in arbitration, and much less than he'd make in Free Agency.

$8m for likely 900+ OPS for a guy you didn't even bring up through your system or trade talent for = steal.

He'd probably get $13 in arby over the next 2 years, they're getting his 1st FA season at $11M. It's a decent deal, but it's no steal. He's got to not suck to get that on the open market.

It's only a steal if last year wasn't a fluke and he puts up monster numbers again. Paying $8 mil for a guy who puts up 40-120 type numbers year in and year out is a steal. Paying $8 mil for a guy who did it in one season and then burns you the rest is a mistake. (See: Beltre, Adrian)

They had a 1 year $6M deal in place before the extention. To think that he'd only get a $1M raise in his last year of arbi is not realistic. He probably would have been more like $9M in his second year (assuming he meets expectations), so basically they bought out a FA year for the same price as his last arbi year.

Rays agreed to terms with first baseman Carlos Pena on a three-year, $24.125 million contract.

Pena will donate $225,000 to the Rays Baseball Foundation as part of the deal, which covers him through age 32. It's an acceptable risk for Tampa Bay. Pena is highly unlikely to ever match his 2007 numbers, but he was decent enough to start in the majors even when he was stuck in Triple-A with the Tigers and Yankees.

this is true, his skills were underrated because he struck out a lot, and his numbers were somewhat weighted down by comerica park before they moved the fences in. yeah, he's not as good as he was last year (when he probably among the top 5 hitters in all of baseball) but he was already a pretty good hitter before that, and has a career line of .258/.365/.509/.874 against RHP. Sit him against tough lefties and play him against everyone else, and you'll definitely get your money's worth.
