MLBTR (no source) says Angels and Sox talking about Konerko

Just thought i'd pass this along, even if it's bogus. MLBTR has been doing a nice job lately of only posting rumors with sources (like prosportsdaily), but here's a "tip" they got :wink:

 

Just got a solid tip that the Angels and White Sox are discussing a possible Paul Konerko deal. That's all I've got for the moment; no idea how serious these talks may be.

 

I do recall the Angels' making an offer to Konerko in the winter of 2005-06. Konerko does have a limited no-trade clause to consider.

A few more tidbits. Some names being bandied about include Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Chone Figgins. Of course, all three would not be in the deal. The Sox also seek relief help.

Could open up Kotchman to be in a Bedard trade if something comes to fruition.

A source told the Daily Breeze that the Angels and White Sox are discussing a Paul Konerko deal, with Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana and Chone Figgins candidates to be involved.

 

We can't imagine that the Angels would seriously entertain the possibility of parting with Kendrick for Konerko. Figgins maybe. It wouldn't be a very good idea at all, but it might not make the team any worse. In our minds, Konerko only makes sense if he replaces Gary Matthews Jr. He and Casey Kotchman had the same OPS last year (841 to 840). Now, Kotchman was protected from left-handed pitchers, but Kotchman actually did well when he got to face southpaws, he's the far better defender and he's due $11.5 million less next season. First base simply isn't a need for the Angels.

I wonder if this deal would be expanded somehow to include Crede and Gary Mathews Jr. The Sox could move Swisher to 1B and Mathews takes over in CF with younger players (Kendrick, Santana ?) coming to the Sox. A deal like this could be beneficial to both teams by clearing some surplus players and adding some youth for the Sox.
