A year ago, I would have gone with Bowden after holding onto Soriano at the trade deadline, but after the past year and collecting Wily Mo Pena and Lastings Milledge, I think he's redeemed himself enough, to let Sabean sneak past him for the honor.

I went with Sabean because not only has he assembled a horrible major league team, his hatred of the draft has caused the entire system to be ridiculously thin. He PURPOSEFULLY gives up draft picks. ON PURPOSE.

Although, like TT said, Colletti could dismantle the gem he was handed. That would be pretty impressive and should win him the top spot.

i voted colletti. he is the gm of a team whose payroll capabilities are either first or second in the national league, and also inherited a farm system that was absolutely loaded with talent. the owner has dedicated significant resources to signing young international talent and setting up top-quality scouting and development programs in latin american countries.

yet despite this, the dodgers didn't make the playoffs last year, and are not anywhere close to being overwhelming favorites in the national league.

plus the juan pierre signing may be the worst contract ever given out in major league baseball.

How can Bavasi have so few votes?

I voted for him. You just can't justify some of the moves he did with the amount of money involved. Then when I realized I could make extra votes, I voted for Ed Wade. He's a bumbling idiot

You don't get extra votes. You just changed your vote from Bavasi to Wade.

And yeah, Wade's an idiot.

For all the crap we've given him, Jim Hendry is probably in the top 25% of GMs.

i could buy that he's better than half, but not top 25%. i can think of a bunch of guys off the top of my head who i definitely think are better than hendry:

pat gillick, phillies

walt jocketty, cincy

doug melvin, milwaukee

kevin towers, s.d.

theo epstein, boston

brian cashman, ny yankees

andrew friedman, tampa

mark shapiro, cleveland

dave dombrowski, detroit

billy beane, oakland

but i'd definitely prefer hendry over:

jim bowden, washington

ed wade, houston

ned colletti, l.a. dodgers

brian sabean, san francisco

jon daniels, texas

there are a whole bunch of guys who really can't be judged fairly at this point:

frank wren, atlanta

michael hill, florida

neal huntington, pittsburgh

john mozeliak, st. louis

mike flanagan, baltimore

bill smith, minnesota

tony reagins, l.a. angels

whoever the new guy in seattle will be

i guess i'd put hendry in a group with omar minaya, dan o'dowd and kenny williams. pretty good resources and fairly mixed results.

by the way, i was curious to see how some of the GMs were ranked by other sources, and i came across this article by forbes that ranks the GMs in the four major sports that had tenures of 3 years or longer. the list (with 98 names on it) was immediately discredited by the following rankings:

1. Kevin McHale, Minnesota Timberwolves

3. Billy King, Philadelphia 76ers

90. Ken Holland, Detroit Red Wings

LOL what in the hell.

I think you could say Hendry is as good as Towers or Cashman. And honestly, I'm interested to see how successful Jocketty is without Dave Duncan to hold together a rotation for him. Classifying him with O'Dowd and Williams seems like a fair one though.

I'm not much of a Hendry apologist, but I'd say he's better than Dan O' Dowd when you realize that O' Dowd has been around forever, usually with bad teams.

I think I'd have to (begrudgingly) put Williams over Hendry.

yes, that list ranks ken holland, the GM of the most successful franchise in hockey, behind isiah thomas.

It's not even that, which is mind-boggling enough, but when you see a list like this with McHale in front, you have to assume that it's in reverse order

I changed my vote to Bavasi after reading a summary of the moves he made:

Beltre

Sexson

Vidro

Washburn

Soriano for Ramirez

Wilkerson

Bedard

Johjima

bad up and down

i stand by my vote for ned colletti, but sabean and bavasi are brutal as well. actually most of these guys are idiots, hence their inclusion on the list. i agree on hendry, he's not in the same ballpark as some of these other clowns.
