I guess reports that he was going to the Padres were incorrect. Hopefully this doesn't make them more desperate for Kosuke.

It does, but i'm not sure how much more the Padres can even offer with their budget. It seems like the final offers are already laid out on the table.

Cough**Pie for Greene or maybe like Marshall/Murton if they wanted a corner OF'er**Cough

Ahem...I must have something in my throat  .

I too would like to see the pie for green deal rehashed. Sign K-Fuk, trade for Roberts and Greene and call it an offseason:

2B Roberts

CF Fukudome

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

LF Soriano

RF DeRosa

SS Greene

C Soto

That would easily be the best lineup in the NL Central and one of the best in the NL. Get it done Jim! 8-)

Greene is a strikeout king. why would we want to add another one?

Good point. Cubs shouldn't look to greatly upgrade from the worst SS production in the league, because they will increase their team Ks.

Because he's young, will greatly benefit from a move out of Petco (check the splits), and will probably give you a legit 25+HR's out of the SS position. He's a very good upgrade from Theriot with the potential to be a huge upgrade. Plus he might be the best defensive SS in the game. Get him out of Petco and you're looking at an .800+ OPS.

i was with you until this point, but you really veered off track here

Why? It's true.

I stand by that statement. While it's a little hard to officially rank players defensively, he's definately in the upper echelon.

Compare him to Jeter's career statistics at short.

Jeter--Fielding % .975 and Zone Rating is .816

Greene--Fielding %.975 and Zone rating is.850

his career FRAA is -22. Feel free to compare that to a SS who is legitimately great at defense; say, Jack Wilson, Adam Everett, John McDonald or Tony Pena.

But Jeter is one of the worst fielding shortshops in the game.

Jeter's career FRAA is -129. Saying Greene is better than Jeter defensively is like saying that Ryan Theriot is better offensively than Cesar Izturis.

The Cubs should be all over Pie for Greene, regardless of what happens with Fukudome. I'd be all for both moves, though. Greene would be a significant upgrade -- especially moving from Petco to Wrigley -- at the Cubs worst offensive position. Theriot is not good, Greene is.

Could you link me to something that explains FRAA? I'm really interested in Sabermetrics, and while I have a good understanding of most offensively, i'm still learning.

Why are we talking career defensive numbers? Who has been better than Greene the last 2 seasons?

well his FRAA the past two years is -3, so...

jack wilson

adam everett

john mcdonald

tony pena jr.

jimmy rollins

j.j. hardy

rafael furcal

omar vizquel

troy tulowitzki

david eckstein

derek jeter

juan uribe

jhonny peralta

michael young

orlando cabrera

it's just Fielding Runs Above Average. A guy with a FRAA of 0 is an average shortstop. Jeter's -129 FRAA means that as a result of his defense, the Yankees have allowed 129 more runs than if they had an average shortstop. This assumes, of course, that FRAA is a perfect stat, which it's not, but it's miles better than the more commonly used fielding statistics like errors, fielding percentage, zone rating and range factor.

Thanks. But doesn't this stat rest alot on how good your starting pitching is? It seems like it should, though seeing a guy like Jack Wilson that high proves otherwise. I mean if a SS gives up a baserunner due to subpar defense but his pitcher always seems to get out of it with no runs, wouldn't it be a little misleading? It seems like the Redsox SS for example would be ranked alot higher than the Pirates SS (though that doesn't seem to be the case).

I have a feeling I might be wrong though and it deals more with MLB offensive averages than individual team averages though.

Probably Adam Everett when he's healthy.

FRAA is much more complex than that. Have a read:
