Not sure the exact structure of this thread, just thought it might be good to have a general "winter meetigns" thread. Specific trade rumors/proposals still keep their own threads, this is more of a random happenings/stuff not worthy of a full thread, thread.

So, first off, They start today correct? Run through Friday? Anyone happen to be going?

Really? I thought I heard on XM that there are Major league and Minor League "expos" throughout the week where teams take applications for for different positions (say...Single A play-by-play guy) and that generally there was a baseball convention...I figured you couldn't actually get into the GM meetings w/o a pass but figured there was at least some stuff for baseball geeks to take in.

Matt Murton is precisely the reason I'm not all that thrilled about getting Fukudome. He's a left handed, older, more expensive Matt Murton. That's a good player, but one we already have for cheap. I'm tired of Hendry's left handed garbage.

Well it is open to the public. I went up to visit some friends who were in different organisations the last time it was in Nashville. The public can come in, it's just that they aren't welcomed.

As far as the job fair goes, one day event. It was tightly controlled, just not every tom, dick, harry. or jane could walk in.

Can I say I just want a good trade or FA signing please? I'm bored of just signing our own players. . Give me something during the WM Hendry. Roberts, I don't care as long as it improves us.

i believe you had to register to be able to attend the job fair, though i'm not positive on that.

Someone go kidnap Jim Hendry and impersonate him and actually make good moves.

To pull off the disguise, you'll need one of these:

Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 went on air a few hours ago with some interesting tidbits regarding the Chicago teams. This was before the Sox acquired Carlos Quentin so I'm not sure what kind of effect that has on this info.

The White Sox are still very much in the mix for Aaron Rowand, but they really don't want to give him five years. By the way Jerry Crasnick mentioned today that the Phillies may be willing to stretch to four years on Rowand or at least three years plus a vesting option.

The Cubs are having all sorts of trade discussions involving Mark Prior. The Rangers and Padres are said to be two interested parties.

Of course the Cubs still have Kosuke Fukudome in their sights. But they also have their eye on Oakland's Nick Swisher and Arizona's Orlando Hudson. Both are switch-hitters, by the way.

Winter Meeting update on ESPNews...

Gammons thinks neither BOS or NYY won't back down on their offers for Santana. They will get Santana on their terms. Just waiting on the Twins to decide.

Ravech asks why not a team like the Cubs. Gammons said it all has to do with the extension Santana is going to want. Teams have to give up prospects and money, if it was just one of those maybe they would be involved.

Gammons thinks Bedard will be traded because he has told them he won't resign with them, but it may not happen this winter. Gammons said Brian Roberts wants to leave Baltimore as well.

Stark wrote on ESPN.com that one GM thinks Beane will start a firesale if the Halos acquire Miguel Cabrera, thus making them "impossible" to catch.

ESPN2 will have a one hour program from the Winter Meetings at 5pm EST.

I'm gonna actually watch (and I barely watch ESPN much anymore). It probably won't be great, but I'll post any important updates here.

Yeah, but at least its an hour devoted to baseball only. Even is 95% is Santana/Red Sox/Yankees talk.

XM is reporting from the winter meetings all week long - with at least the morning show going an hour longer (5-9am central). Would guess they're doing similar with Charlie Steiner and "the show" in the PM. They'll also be covering the Rule 5 draft in its entirety on Thursday.

If I remember hearing correctly, Nathan is down in Nashville with a contingent of Chiefs folks, so hopefully he'll have a chance to drop by and tell us how things are going. Pretty sure they're going to announce 2008 minor league managers for the Cubs this week too.

Talking about Marlins jerking everyone around. Apparantly, they asked the Angels if they if they would trade a certain package and the Angels said yes, thinking this was completeing the trade, but the Marlins went to other teams to compare the price and the Angels got ticked off.
