Johan Santana-S- Twins Dec. 1 - 3:32 pm et

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Lavelle E. Neal III believes the Yankees are now offering Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy in return for Johan Santana.

He also says the Twins are no longer interested in a Red Sox package that includes Coco Crisp rather than Jacoby Ellsbury. If both of his beliefs are true, then it would seem as though the a trade between the Twins and Yankees would get done any day now. However, Neal goes on to say that he thinks the Mets are backing down on not offering Jose Reyes and that Santana might prefer the NL to the AL. Color us skeptical about everything presented here.

Related: Jose Reyes, Jacoby Ellsbury, Red Sox, Mets, Yankees

If I'm the Twins, I demand they throw in one of Jackson or Tabata or upgrade Cabrera to Cano with one of Betances or McAllister thrown in.

FWIW, I don't see anything anywhere else.

Doubt if anything official happens with this deal anytime soon. You would have to assume that this deal would hinge upon whether they can get a long term deal worked out with Santana. No way the Yankees are giving up Hughes, Kennedy and Cabrera for a 1 year rental.

No, but I would love it a lot if they did.

Reports are out that the Red Sox have improved their offer. Many think this could be resolved in the next 48 hours.

Any word on what the new and improved offer looks like?

No. This is what rotoworld says...

ESPN's Buster Olney says the Red Sox came up with new ideas in their trade proposal for Johan Santana following their latest round of talks with the Twins on Saturday afternoon.

Baseball is like a democracy.

The yankees are the democrats and the redsox are the republicans. NObody else has much of a chance.

innesota has requested the Yankees surrender either pitcher Alan Horne or outfielder Austin Jackson as the third player, but the Yankees have thus far refused to include either in the deal for the two-time Cy Young winner. Most baseball insiders still see the Yankees as the favorite to land Santana with their inclusion of Hughes, but if the sides can't agree on the third prospect, the Yankees may consider setting a deadline for Minnesota to accept their proposal.

It appears the Red Sox would only consider parting with Ellsbury if the Twins offered an extra player or two in addition to Santana, and people close to the situation say that would take considerable creativity. Boston and Minnesota have remained in contact, but it's believed the Yankees have come closer to meeting the Twins' asking price to this point.
