hey screw you Reinsdorf you should be saving that money for Kobe Bryant.

Think about it. Torii Hunter is going to get 6 years and $90M (if the rumor is true). It makes Jacque Jones' 3 year deal for $16M a few years back look almost reasonable.

And it makes Mr. Reinsdorf look like a pud for wasting this dough on a baseball team that is going nowhere fast, yet refusing to pay the luxury on tax on his basketball team that is a superstar away from the finals.

considering that career-wise, they're nearly exactly the same player (only JJ didn't rob a Bonds homer in an All Star Game, so....)

This is a very Reinsdorf-like move. It is VERY similar to the Ben Wallace to the Bulls signing. Both are hard working, leadership guys who are very overrated because of their defense and "flash". Hunter's diving catches and Wallace's afro and shot blocking.

Like Wallace, Hunter's contract will seem OK for the first 1/3rd or so (2 years for Hunter) and everyone will turn the other way while still seeing diminishing skills. The next 1/3rd will be the obvious decline. And the last 1/3rd, fans will be barbecuing the GM for the signing and running the player out of town for 50 cents on the dollar.

Good times!!!

You mean like Soriano

As far as offense goes, Hunter is like the poor man's Soriano. A lot of strikeouts, few walks, so forth. Hunter isn't as crappy a clutch hitter as Soriano, but still, that's a nice barrier to break - the first team to give $15 million a year to a hitter with a career OPS under .800. He's also a poor basestealer and probably the most consistently overrated player defensively at his position since Bret Boone.

Really?

Close and Late-

Soriano:

277/335/439 (career)

318/356/578 (2007)

Hunter:

259/325/433 (career)

287/357/460 (2007)

I don't know where you got the idea that Hunter was a better "clutch" hitter (if those exist), but it appears that they are quite similar with Soriano being a bit better both last year and for their careers.

2007

Bases empty - .318/.937

RISP - .258/.827

2006

.278/.883

.231/.873

2005:

.292/.887

.235/.733

2004:

.265/.788

.253/.705

2003:

.305/.918

.259/.777

That's a pretty heavy split, all things considered. For his career, he's .290/.868 with the bases empty, .269/.803 with runners on, .252/.769, .230/.743 with RISP/2 outs, and .276/.727 with the bases loaded.

You don't often see a straight descending OPS as the stake are ratcheted up for a player. Also, up until the bases loaded, you see a straight batting average decline. That's not very common either.

I'm more clutch than either of those hacks. Terrible signing for the Sox. I think I've pointed out several times before how much I think Torii is overrated. Cripes, if he can get $15 per, I should be able to get 3 or 4.

PS - I want :stickman: back

If clutch exists, it certainly can't be found in "close and late" stats.

Soriano was a little clutch in the All Star Game, and with the Yankees in the playoffs - I remember a pretty clutch bomb. Then again, we lost in three....

A lot of moves and a lot of money to vault from fourth to third place. With a little luck they might come in a distant second and fall well short of the wild card.

Man, the White Sox should've just talked to us instead of paying all this money. The Tigers got Torii Hunter simply by giving up Omar Infante.
