How about a 3-way trade with the Dodgers and Phillies:

Cubs trade: Dempster, Marshall, and Ohman to Phillies (desperate for pitching) and Cedeno and Patterson to Dodgers.

Phillies trade: Burrell to Dodgers (desperate for a big bat).

Dodgers trade: Eithier and Furcal to the Cubs.

There's some rumors the Dodgers are planning to make a push for Rowand. If they do, they'll have to move Pierre to LF. Pierre is bad in CF and even less in LF.

I have no desire for Pierre, but it could be possible that the Cubs could get one of the Dodgers (Kemp or Loney) better young players if they were willing to take back Pierre.

Pierre's contract is pretty bad, so the Dodgers would have to pick up a chunk of that as well.

If they pick up 80% of it ......maybe, otherwise no way unless Hendry can line up someone to take Pierre (with his lower contract obligations) off his hands.

Like someone else said, I don't think the Dodgers are all that eager to deal Furcal (or as eager as they should be). But even if you take Cedeno and Furcal out of that equation, its still a big win for the cubs. They might like the flexibility of Dempster to either start or relieve (Myers). They've been desperate to get rid of Burrell in the past, but I wonder how they feel now that they traded Bourn and Rowand isn't going to be resigned. Its definitely an interesting scenario to play with, though.

How often does this type of proposal work -- i.e. the type where you try to wow another GM with sheer body count and hope he'll give you 2 or more of his best players? I can say that if I were a GM this stuff wouldn't work on me. Quality trumps quantity.

Weren't the Phillies willing to give away Pat Burrell at one point? I'd see no reason they'd hold onto him for two more years at huge money to get a couple nice pitching pieces in return.

I'd go after Ethier and offer to take Furcal, and his contract, off their hands.

I doubt that they're desperate to move $13/1. Also, I doubt that Joe Torre wants to start his Dodger tenure with a rookie SS.

If you offered to take most of Pierre's deal, you could probably get rid of Marquis (maybe Eyre and Blanco, too?) and possibly get Ethier in the process.

I doubt many here would find that appealing.

I also don't see any reason why the Dodgers would expend extremely valuable trading chips to unload Furcal. He's only signed for one more year and SS are always in demand. They could just eat a few million and find a taker for Furcal. They wouldn't need to waste Ethier. If we are serious about getting Ethier/Kemp/Loney we have to take Pierre, not Furcal.

If the Orioles turned down all three of those players, they'd be insane.

If the Dodgers are willing to deal those guys, the Cubs should get involved. Not that anything is going to happen. Just kick the tires. It's not like Ned Coletti is incapable of making a mistake.

I'm not that big on Ethier, especially to the point of helping other teams in the league make themselves into beasts.

Agreed. Ethier doesn't really do it for me. I like his IsoD and relative youth, but I don't see the power potential as a LFer; plus his SLG% was pretty much identical for home vs. away, so there isn't overwhelming evidence that he's going to blossom into some huge OPS machine once he gets away from Dodger Stadium.
