From the end of Sullivan's latest...

Outside of right and center fields, the other big area of concern is the rotation, where Marquis' hefty contract has put Hendry in a bind. If rumors that Wood wants to return to a starting role are true, Hendry may make the impending free agent an offer he can't refuse and let Marquis compete with Kevin Hart for the No. 5 spot.

I like him in the pen at least for another year...if he proves he can stay healthy there for a full year then maybe you let him try starting the year after.

Well, if Wood wants to start then some team, whether it's the Cubs or not, will give him that opportunity. You can be certain of that.

The question becomes, do the Cubs let him leave to pursue that or do they give him the opportunity?

I think we have enough depth to let him try.

We may be limited in dollars we can offer him, but I think if the offer is fair Wood take it over going to another team as long as we promise him the opportunity to start.

Has Wood ever fixed his mechanics? Or is there any reason to believe that his arm could withstand 200 Innings?

Also, Sullivan is not the only writer that is commenting on Marquis needing to battle for the 5th spot in the rotation. Maybe Hendry can use Marquis decent year to his advantage and trade him to get out from under his contract.

No, and no. His problem was throwing across his body, which put too much torque on his shoulder. Obviously, with the way he dramatically falls off the mound after every pitch, he hasn't changed anything.

IIRC, he actually verbally refused to change his mechanics the offseason before his last long stint on the DL (2005?). I really don't see him getting another shot at it for that reason.

I say leave him where the mechanics are really not an issue.

This is really unbelievable. The 2nd half of the season Wood remained as healthy as he has in quite some time and was pretty effective. Can't he take a hint!!?!!? The Starter thing is ova. Serioulsy. He has the potential to be an elite reliever the 2nd half of his career so why can't he accept that.

I'd like to see him be a starter again. I'm fearful this year might be too soon, but only he knows at this point how he feels.

I don't mind letting him try, but I'd prefer to keep him in the pen if he'll stay healthy rather than let him try to start and end up burning another year on the DL.

But I'm confused by the quote. If Wood is the 4th starter, and we have Z, Lilly, and Hill as the first 3, why are Marquis & Hart fighting for #5? Where's Marshall in all this?

If Wood is really interested in starting, do you think that increases the chance that he goes with Dusty and the Reds?

I have no doubt.

What if Wood does sign with the Reds and then they break the bank and get ARod, the bigger question is, would you still root for the Cubs over Dunn and that crew of players even with Dusty?

..., where Marquis' hefty contract has put Hendry in a bind.

yeah, i really feel sorry for Hendry. it sucks that he inherited that horrible contract. wait, what? he signed that one? nevermind

This issue just reminds me of a reoccurring nightmare, depend on Wood as a starter and re-sign Prior just in case he's healthy someday. Both players were talented but it's time to cut the ties.

Is it just me thinking that ol' Sully started the rumors?

I still cannot believe we gave Marquis a 3/21 contract. Terrible.

Quit thinking like that...now its 2 years 14 million...still bad, but not as bad.

It's no secret that Wood prefers starting to relieving. If a team gave him a chance to start, I bet he'd take it. The question is, would he rather give starting a try, last a year at most and call it a career or see how long he can last as a reliever.

Actually, it's $16.25/2. Even worse.

Really? Wood has always acting in a fashion that dictated he loves being a Cub. I predict Wood retires a Cub.

And while I get the "only 2 years left" plan for making yourself sane, the truth is that we can't pretend that he didn't have an effect on our team in 2007. Both in performance and salary that could have been allocated in areas of greater need.

you got to think that with the free agent pool of pitchers...it has to be at least reasonably possible to move marquis this offseason...

i mean christ, look at lohse...
