Cubs trade: Marshall, Ohman, Patterson, Jones, Veal, Cedeno

Cubs get: Tejada and Bedard

Orioles save about $10 million and get a starter (Marshall) to replace Bedard, a SS (Cedeno) to replace Tejada, fill a need in LF (Jones), fill a need in the bullpen (Ohman), fill a need in CF (Patterson), and receive a future starting pitcher (Veal).

Cubs fill their offensive need at SS and get a quality starter under their control for two more years.

Lineup: Starters:

Soriano LF Zambrano

Derosa 2b Lilly

Lee 1b Bedard

ARam 3b Hill

Tejada SS Marquis/Gallagher/Prior

Murton RF

Soto C

Pie CF

Sounds good to me.

So, if on the uber aggressive side, we can get Tejada for Marshall and Cedeno, you are saying that all it will take is Patterson, Veal, Ohman, and Jones to get Bedard?

And on the more realistic side, it will take Marshall and Patterson. Possibly Veal as well.

I don't understand where people get that we can trade virtually nothing for Bedard.

Bedard is not a quality starter. He is an elite pitcher who would be an ace on MANY other teams (including ours). His k/9 is scary good.

I would think Cabrera could be had much more easily.

Nobody's getting Bedard. People don't realize just how good a season he had. He's near untouchable. I'm becoming convinced we wind up with Tejada though.

He was incredible this year. He's as untouchable right now as Prior was after 2003.

Posted
I wouldn't exactly agree with everyone that Bedard is untouchable. The Orioles are at a place where they obivously aren't going to contend in the next few years (or more realistically ever). Bedard's name does get brought up in the papers, but its going to take a Santana like offer, not our left over prospects.

The word around here is that Bedard isn't a good clubhouse guy. His talent ought to supercede that but we're talking about MacPhail and some other parts of the former Cubs brain trust.

I could see Bedard getting traded. I wonder how much his late season injury hurts his value though and how that affects the O's willingness to trade him.

Change Ohman to Hill and maybe they go for the original deal.

Posted

You gotta figure MacPhail will try like heck to get Bedard signed to an extension. He's big on keeping homegrown talent, and he's also big on building a team around pitching.

Trading Bedard would be a last resort, and one he wouldn't have to fall back on before July at the earliest, but more likely next winter, or even the following July.

I was thinking of something along those lines the other day. However, I really doubt the Orioles would be inclined to trade their best starting pitcher, who would be a #1 or #2 on most teams. I don't doubt we'd get Tejada, but Bedard seems unlikely. There aren't many pitchers from them I'd want either. As earlier stated, Cabrera may be easy to obtain, but he is wild and hasn't reached his potnetial. We're trying to get better, not worse.

Of course, it couldn't hurt to ask what it would take to acquire Bedard.

i don't understand what the incentive would be to trade bedard. this is a reach

But we're giving them Patterson (who cant play 2b) and Veal (who can't throw a strike)!!!!! They HAVE to give us their best player!!!!!

And saying, "Replace Ohman with Hill" is like saying, "The deal would be fine as long as you throw in Aramis."

BtoB,

Might it be easier to get Edgar Renteria? He had a better year than Tejada, and only has 1 year left on his deal. Boston has already paid Atlanta for his buyout clause.

How about we sign ARod and then trade Aramis, Prior, Veal, Marshall, Jones, Cedeno for Tejada and Bedard?

1. Soriano

2. DeRosa

3. Lee

4. Rodriguez

5. Tejada

6. Murton

7. Soto

8. Pie

1. Zambrano

2. Bedard

3. Lilly

4. Hill

5. Marquis

BTW, I put very little thought into this post, just wanted to throw a crazy idea out there.

Hoops,

I would rather get Renteria because of the cost, but when I saw on a few sites that the Orioles might have to listen to offers on Bedard because of their situation, I thought maybe we could obtain two players in one big deal. Renteria for Marshall plus Theriot?

I'll ask my usual questions when I see this type of proposal:

A) Would you consider this a good trade if you were a fan of the other team?

B) Do you really think the other team couldn't get a better offer for the listed players?

I know its completely ridiculous for the Dodgers to sell the farm, but at least they are getting a ton of production back and some young guys.

I just assume Colletti being in the Holy Triumverent of idiodic front offices (Cubs, Giants, Dodgers) would want exactly the opposite of what I would want. So, you exploit the vets vs. rooks fiasco thats going on right now in LA, by taking on the players that were an issue (Kemp/Loney/Ethier) along with a guy they've jerked around (Billingsley) and lets throw in Kershaw and LaRoche for good measure.

It really makes the Dodgers probably one of the teams to beat in the NL

But it also makes them expensive and with a short time horizon. The dodgers should go young, but it seems like they don't want to do that, and this gives them a reasonable expectation of winning it all next year. Especially considering their division is ultra competitive right now.

As far as the Santana trade goes, I see them needing position players moreso than pitchers. They have a stable of young developing arms, thats why I'd think they'd be interested in Pie and LaRoche. Smith has recently mentioned trying to exploit the small RF and get Left handers (Pie and Jones). Veal is a throw in high reward pitcher. If I were them, I'd prefer Kemp and Kershaw, but thats why the Dodger trade works out so well...eliminates the competition.

Yeah I know....although when everyone comes up with crazy insane fantasy baseball trades, this is the one that pops into my head. At least it follows 2 of the 3 things usually needed for a trade to be realistic

Its relatively payroll neutral (well, for the cubs at least, not for the dodgers)

Meets all teams needs/accomplishes goals/makes them better

However, theres just a smidge too many players involved in that Dodgers/Cubs deal.

But man, if you were the GM and pulled that (assuming a Santana extention is part of the deal), you could just sit back, relax and watch the trophies come in for years and years.

As the Dodgers are now, with a healthy Schmidt (I know, I know) and a new manager with an outlook to the future, they are one of the teams to beat in the NL for the next five years. The question is, when are they gonna start giving Kemp and Loney real PT?
