Palm Beach Post[/url]"]Free-agent outfielder Cliff Floyd said he is thinking about retiring after 15 seasons. But first he wants to take a swing at ending his career where he had some of his best years - in Florida.

"I would love to come to the Marlins. You know how far we go back,'' said Floyd, Florida's left fielder from 1997 until July 2002.

Floyd, who lives outside Fort Lauderdale, played for the Chicago Cubs this season. He could provide the veteran leadership the Marlins have lacked the last two years. He also knows the style and personality of manager Fredi Gonzalez, who was Florida's third-base coach from 1999- 2001.

"I would love the opportunity to come home, chill out and help Fredi win some ballgames,'' said Floyd, an All-Star in 2001 when he hit .317 with 31 homers and 103 RBI. "But if I don't get an opportunity to come here, hopefully I'll get a good job that'll give me an opportunity to play the outfield and DH.''

While the Marlins are Floyd's top choice, he has told his agents to reach out to every team this winter.

"If I don't get an offer, I can tell you I'm retiring,'' said Floyd, who will turn 35 on Dec. 5.

Floyd is likely to get offers from several teams. But whether the Marlins are interested remains to be seen. They need a center fielder, but he now plays the corner outfield positions and first base.

If a Major League team doesn't offer me a contract this year, I'm retiring from baseball too.

I retired from the NFL quite a few years ago

I know, Mr Krenzel.

So a return to the Cubs doesn't even seem like an option.

I could see a team like the A's inking him to a minor league deal. He can back up 1B and RF and DH, and he still gets on base at a decent clip.

Floyd speaking so openly about his desire to go to Florida leads me to think that Hendry has either already told him that he won't be brought back, or has now made Hendry decide that he's not interested.

Floyd made it clear on the Mike North show that he was "50/50" on returning to the Cubs, depending on "what they wanted to do with Murton."

This may be an indicator that the Cubs plan on Murton or Murton/Jones in RF in 08.

I was thinking the same thing, that Hendry already said thanks for your services, we wish you luck in your future endeavors.

I wish him well. I always liked him as a player. I didnt want him at his age and health last year. Hopefully he can put together a decent year next year with someon.

I flat-out giggled when I pictured Cliffy in CF, ever. He's about as coordinated as a bear on rollerskates.

I wish I could have retired at 35 but damn with three kids a car payment and a huge mortgage I have to keep on trucking until I'm old enough to collect what pension I have coming.

Pie for Hermida - Fla gets their CF

They sign Floyd to fill the hole in RF

We play Soriano / Jones / Hermida across the OF, with Murt as our 4th OF.

Let's hope we stick with Murton.

I imagine that the price for Hermida has moved where Hendry won't go - into the Rich Hill neighborhood.
