Oh, one thing I did not like was Lee's little "Oh I am so frustrated tantrum" when he missed strike 3 and their catcher dropped the ball. He could have possibly made it to first safely and then you get Aramis up who did end up hitting the ball to the track twice. Instead we get to see Lee kick his legs up and twirl his bat like a baton and whine allowing plenty of time to get thrown out at first. Way to keep your head in the game. Not that it cost them the game or anything but it just seem liked the Cubs had a lot of little things bit them last night.

That reminds me. I forget which inning it was that Lee was on first and A-Ram struck out but the ball got away and Lee went to 2nd. A-Ram started to run to first but it looked like he was told by the home plate ump he was out. Why couldn't he advance on a dropped 3rd strike?

I agree with the whole idea that if Z was going to have an early exit and the bullpen is so reliable, pulling Z an inning earlier to have a PH in that spot makes sense. The best argument against it, though, is that Z was making better contact than anyone else in the order, though I'm not shocked at all that Webb adjusted and Z had no chance of keeping up.

As for morning after thoughts: If the offense makes an impressive showing tonight, I'll have some mildly restored optimism. Until then, the sky is still falling.

I thought during the top of the 7th that they said Z was going to pulled because of heat exhaustion? Were they talking about somebody else or did I not hear right?

I'm a little surprised that I've read people here complaining about the Cubs swinging at first pitches last night. If anything, they didn't do it enough. I counted at least a dozen 1st pitch fastballs that Webb tossed that basically went right down the middle...exactly like the scouting report says about him. After that, he keeps it low and almost unhittable. Waiting was going to accomplish nothing against a pitcher as a good as him, especially when guys like Lee, Aramis and DeRosa have excellent 1st pitch hit numbers this year. Edited by Sammy Sofa

Because there was a runner on 1B.

Lee was on first. I think you can only take first if there was no runner on first when strike 3 was called.

The MO for tonight is the polar opposite, they're facing guy who's stuff is mediocre to begin with and if you let him, will walk himself into trouble 95BB in 190+IP.

Right, if the guy who strikes out is entitled to 1st while it's occupied, that forces the guy on 1st to go to 2nd. From that you'd have catchers dropping every 3rd strike with a guy on first, and getting the 1-6-3 DP from it. You can advance to 1st on a dropped 3rd with 2 outs because there's no DP in order.

Hey, man, I don't know about you, but my mind was really fried today here at work. These late games are killers. I've got to get up at 4:00 A.M. to throw papers and then report at 6:30 at my "real" job. Tomorrow I'm gonna be a zombie....so I can feel your pain!

If the Cubs win tonight, it will be worth it.

It's simple. Unless we score runs, we are going to lose.

that is very joe morgan-esque

hall of fame worthy

Well, we didn't last night and we lost so it must be true.

I think you are absolutely right. In certain situations, it may be important to take a couple of pitches. Last night however, most of the time the only decent pitch to hit was the 1st one. It even seemed like it carried over to the DBacks' bullpen.
