Carlos Peña-1B- Devil Rays Oct. 2 - 1:36 pm et

Carlos Pena won comeback player of the year honors for the AL in the balloting announced Tuesday.

Jon Lester pulled off a comeback from cancer. Pena's only problem was that most teams have quality first basemen and the ones that didn't weren't smart enough to look at him over the Sean Caseys and Doug Mientkiewiczs of the world. That said, Pena did deserve some hardware for finishing second in the AL in homers and third in OPS. He'll also be rewarded in arbitration this winter.

Dmitri Young-1B- Nationals Oct. 2 - 1:30 pm et

Dmitri Young was chosen as the NL comeback player of the year Tuesday.

MLB had let the fans decide this award the previous couple of years, turning it into a strict popularity contest. If that had happened this year, we doubt Young would have had much of a chance. However, MLB this year had MLB.com reporters make the choice and Young was able to beat out Josh Hamilton, Tim Hudson, Pat Burrell and others. Young appeared to be completely unwanted lsat year until the Nats gave him a deal that didn't even include an invitation to spring training on Feb. 14. He ended up making the team, hitting .320/.378/.491 in 460 at-bats and earning himself a two-year deal.
