[ok, ok... Cubs could clinch tomorrow if they win + Brewers loss, but everything else is still way up in the air]

NL East:

PHI 87-72 --

NYM 87-72 --

NL Central:

CHC 83-76 --

MIL 81-78 2.0

NL West:

ARI 89-70 --

SDP 88-71 1.0

COL 87-72 2.0

NL WildCard:

(ARI 89-70)

SDP 88-71 --

PHI 87-72 1.0

NYM 87-72 1.0

COL 87-72 1.0

Pretty much playoff baseball, except its not called that, in the final weekend of the season. Its a "win or go home" 3-game series fo 5 teams [Cubs & ARI excluded since they lead their respective divisions currently].

Last 3 games for teams involved;

PHI vs Nationals

NYM vs Marlins

CHC @ Reds

MIL vs Padres

ARI @ Rockies (***)

SDP @ Brewers

(***) = playoff matchup that can't actually be called a "playoff matchup"! Wow. Definitely a series to keep an eye on, besides ours and SD/MIL.

has there ever been a time in the wild card era that we've gotten to the last 3 days of the season and no teams had yet to clinch a playoff spot? I'd be really surprised if this has happened before.

It is amazing. I know we're not in the playoffs yet - but, the last 2 weeks have been like the playoffs. It's adrenaline rush every day. I'm praying for poor Ron. I hope he doesn't stroke out on us.

Looking at all possible playoff possibilities..... Cubs (or Brewers) will be 3-seed regardless - aka, they can't win out and finish ahead of any of the other divisional winners [or the WC winner for that matter]. I'm only gonna use the Cubs for the Central (HOMER!) but should the Brewers take it, you could just sub them in wherever the Cubs are at;

There's just tooooooooo many to list... but if narrow it down to just who will be the playoff teams, we can get a gauge - doesn't really matter their seeds, as matchups will come out either way.

- NYM-ARI-CHC-SD

Mets vs Padres / Dbacks vs Cubs or Mets vs Dbacks / Padres vs Cubs

- NYM-ARI-CHC-PHI

Mets vs Cubs / Dbacks vs Phillies or Mets vs Dbacks / Phillies vs Cubs

- NYM-ARI-CHC-COL

Mets vs Rockies / Dbacks vs Cubs or Mets vs Dbacks / Rockies vs Cubs

- ARI-PHI-CHC-SD

Dbacks vs Cubs / Phillies vs Padres or Dbacks vs Phillies / Padres vs Cubs

- ARI-PHI-CHC-NYM

Dbacks vs Mets / Phillies vs Cubs or Dbacks vs Phillies / Mets vs Cubs

- ARI-PHI-CHC-COL

Dbacks vs Cubs / Phillies vs Rockies or Dbacks vs Phillies / Rockies vs Cubs

- SD-NYM-CHC-COL

Padres vs Cubs / Mets vs Rockies or Padres vs Mets / Rockies vs Cubs

- SD-PHI-CHC-COL

Padres vs Cubs / Phillies vs Rockies or Padres vs Phillies / Rockies v Cubs

So 4 NLDS matchup possibilities vs the Dbacks, 4 each vs Padres or Rockies & 2 each vs Mets or Phillies.

A "friend" of mine that moved to GA a while back is a Mets fan, and he called me tonight drunk and I tried to explain pretty much this exact thread to him before it was posted, but I failed miserably. Though I was pretty sure that the Cubs could still wind up facing any one of the five teams remaining in the other two divisions. Crazy stuff!

I'm really rooting for the NL playoffs to feature: Arizona, Philly, Colorado and the Cubs. That's all new blood in the playoffs. Very little playoff "experience" from the teams involved. 2 teams that haven't won in modern history. One that hasn't won or been in the playoffs in a long while. And Arizona who has a recent championship, but hasn't had any of those players on the team for a couple years.

Plus, Colorado and Philly would be a hell of a series.

Hmm. Just thought about it. Gonna be tough to get the D'Backs and Rockies in the playoffs together. Really, the only way for it to happen would be for Col. to take at least 2 from the D'Backs this weekend AND have Milwaukee win out vs. the Padres. Don't mind this scenario if the Cubs win the next 2, but I'd rather them get it done tonight.

I'm really hoping for the Cubs, Mets, Phillies and Padres, just because it gives me the greatest chance of attending games. It would mean SD took care of MIL as well.

But I still think the most likely scenario is the Cubs will be in Arizona next week.

Very good chance for at least one playoff game on Monday, and a couple different "massive ties" scenario with 3-way or 4-way ties with 2-3 days worth of games and essentially a wild-card tournament.

That could potentially wreck some teams' rotations and bullpens for the Divisional Series.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc$

y do I sense the Cobs as being a HUGE part of that?

What happens if the Phillies and Mets tie....then the D'Backs or Rockies tie with the Padres?

I'm assuming the 4 would meet for the division title going to the 2 winners and then the losers in a 1-game playoff for the wildcard. That could be fun. Rockies and DBacks can't tie.

I'm sure that's how it would work, since the division champions need to be determined first in order to know who the wildcard contenders are.

Of course, if all this happens the Cubs won't know their playoff destination and opponent until the night before the start of the series. At least they'd be much better rested than their opponent, though.
