Another crappy bounce. Great job DLee.

 

This is it man. If you could somehow hold this one run lead the Cards season is effectively over. Cards' announcers pretty much just said the same thing last inning.

Why do players dive to 1B? Wouldn't it be faster to run past it? I mean, isnt sliding so you won't go past 2B, 3B, or avoid the tag at home?

Some guys... see Jerry Hairston Jr. think it makes the play look closer by causing chaos at first base or something. Yes, it is faster to run through the bad.

Pretty old, well-discussed question. I believe there is some pretty good data that shows sliding slows you down, and should only be done to avoid the tag.
