The Dempster bashing is a freaking joke.

Completely agreed-the first ball should have been an out, the second one should have been a double at most, and Dempster did a great job of pitching out of the jam.

BTW, to answer the question earlier, Floyd was taken out and Jones did slide over to RF in the 8th.

Thanks for the Floyd answer, that was the obvious and right move but I wasn't paying attention when Pie came in so I didn't know.

In hindsight, the jam itself wasnt really Demps fault. The Loretta hit was a fluke and the Lamb triple should have been a single had Pie played it right.

Exactly. And if people want to argue that a closer then has to deal with those flukes, well, he did. I think these are the kinds of closes that, contrary to the drama, show how good Dempster can actually be in the role.

maybe, but i'd still rather have Marmol

Remember, a lot of closes aren't like this...most of them aren't. The high drama ones just stick out. Marmol is much more useful coming in between the 6th and 8th innings, where the pressure is usually MUCH higher.

I have no problem with using Marmol in a 1-run game in the 9th but I also would like to see his arm exist next season.

I agree. I've never heard so many people unsatisfied with a 90% save percentage. Sure he has had some bad outings in non-save situations, but he's still one of the more consistent closers the Cubs have had in awhile.

I dont mean to trash Dempster or destroy Marmols arm, I just LOVE the potential that is CARLOS TO CARLOS. a Carlos craddle to grave pitching performance :)

Agreed. He could easily Tommy John himself. It happens to many a young fire baller.

I almost think some people WANTED him to blow it, just so they could bash him more. (Well I know this is probably not true, but it sure seems like it).

I guess Ive been away from NSBB for awile, but has there really been that much Dempster bashing here lately?

I really liked the 3-2 changeup to Palmeiro. A fastball would of hurt more than a change in the dirt. I didnt give a damn about that walk. OP is good batsman in that instance.

Dempster was solid.

He blew his first save in like a month against the Dodgers and was being strung up. He's not the greatest, but he's not anywhere near as awful as some make him out to be. And when he succeed's it's "luck". It's just frustrating.

IC..well my comments had nothing to do with any of that, more my fascination with Marmol...

That blown save vs the dodgers was Dempsters 1st blown save since June 10th.

It's mostly game threads where every time he(or any other reliever not named Marmol) comes into the game there's 10 people lining up to say how they're going to blow it. Though people have seemed to soften on Howry lately. On the rare occassion that Dempster does blow a save, there will instantly be a thread in rants created/bumped along with one in baseball discussions and one in transactions talking about what closers we can acquire instead.

Naw, he'll be fine. The Saints pulled the same stunt last year against the Redskins. Brees threw for 200 yards in 38 attempts and had a QB rating of 59.

If anyones glad Demp didnt blow it, its Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez, because if he did, surely their combined 0 for 12 would have been brought up as a factor in the loss. Those 3 need to bring it if they want the post season to become a reality.

True, but before tonight all those 3 had a .994 OPS or higher in September. Those 3 have been carrying the Cubs the last couple weeks, so I'm actually glad to see a night where the other hitters stepped up.

He was on Howard Stern today...it's scary that people like him exist. He said the Britney bashing is much worse than 9/11, and unfortunately I think he was being serious.
