He's been good enough to be an ace of the Cubs but he's never been top 5 in either league at any point. He walks too many batters and his subsequent WHIP not at the elite level (only one year under 1.2 and that was a 1.15 in 2005).

There's a difference in having great stuff and harnessing or maximizing that great stuff.

His control isn't that great. That factors in to determining how great a pitchers 'stuff' is.

That's debatable. I look a stuff and command differently. Stuff + command = effectiveness.

Zambrano:

"I love the Cubs fans"

"They have the right to boo"

This is jibberish. Seems like Hendry and McDonough told him a bunch of stuff to say, and it's coming out in scattershot order.

It sounds like the opposite of what he said yesterday

Do the fans even care? Just pitch well and we'll love ya!

Ok, now that he's apologized, I hope we can all move on and give the guy a break. As someone pointed out earlier, its not like he is a loafing, non caring player. This guy wants to win as much as any Cub I have seen in awhile.

Pitch better and he'll get his wish.

Actually, let me add an idiot as well. Anyone who predicts he will be the Cy Young winner is arrogant and an idiot.

This is untrue. If I am Pedro Martinez and it's the offseason between 1999 and 2000, and I say I predict I will win the CYA, does that make me an idiot or arrogant? That makes me betting on the odds. But this is a tangent but there are a few cases where predicting a CYA for yourself isn't idiotic. I don't have a problem with that comment. It came off wrong, but it seemed to me like that was his goal. Frankly, I'd rather his goal be to win the CYA than make the playoffs, because of he does the first the second would come.

No, because Pedro usually backs it up.

And so does Z. Until 3 months out of this year.

Z's never had Cy Young stuff. Pedro did.

Sure he has. He has some of the best stuff in all of baseball.

Not as good as Pedro in his prime.

so carlos zambrano isn't as good as (arguably) the best pitcher of all-time? shame on him.

I knew it was going to come..No way he would rip the fans after signing a new contract and go out everytime and get booed..I guess its going on right now

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/09/zambrano-meets-.html

Since there was a good bit of discussion about Z's apology in this thread, I went ahead and merged this.

I figured when I seen it gone..Anyway, I think this is just another one of those times a guy says what he really thinks and beleives.. Then his agent, manager, etc. comes out at say, " Dude, you gotta apologize,do you really want to go out there everytime and have people boo you and say negative things about you?" this would just haunt him for years to come so it's obvious he had to do it..Im sure deep down he really meant when he said, and like all the other guys who say negative things about other people or fanbases, they retract it the next day with sum BS like " um I didnt mean it uhh I was out of line" etc..Its so obvious he had the people above him tell him to apologize because of the consequenses thta he could face

Is there a stat on "stuff"?

No. You use your eyes.

You can use a scouting eye, which is not great. Zambrano's sinking fastball used to grade out as a 75-80. It is now probably in the 60-70 range. His offspeed stuff falls into the 30-50 range depending on the pitch.

BP has a stuff score which measures "dominance"

People that boo players based on performance are fickle moronic idiots. It's so stupid that it's beyond my comprehension how fans can cheer a player for two months and the minute they struggle they get booed not sporadically, but by the entire crowd.

It's classless, bushleague, philly type crap, and it doesn't surprise me that even people in here are ripping him. The guy has been our best pitcher BY far, for the last 4 years. He's built up some equity.

The fact that he actually cares, is his downfall. In a time with athletes that don't give a crap about fans and what they think, you could genuinely tell that Z cared about that reaction. It's actually refreshing to me. I agree 100% with everything he said, although fans might not be selfish, they are certainly hypocritical idiots. he signed for less money because he really wanted nothing more than to be a Cub for life. And with that he is rewarded by the crap yesterday.

The only reason players should be booed is for lack of effort. And no one wants to win more than Carlos. I'm embarrassed about what Wrigley is turning into.

I just want to quote this for it's pure awesomeness. Way to go Badger.
