are they doing a system evaluation or something?

So, if I read that right, Tennessee is in with a win.

As long as Chattanooga doesn't win the second half division (the WC is in place if the same team wins both halves of the division).

James Russell with 4 K and 1 BB in 2 scoreless and hitless innings in his Peoria debut.

I think it is mostly a coincidence. Bialas was with us in Wisconsin. With the Cubs on the road its an easy drive down for Hughes and Fleita to see all the new guys (Barney, JOhnson, Russell, Hempy, Wright, Smith, Siegfried)

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Edge New Orleans 2-1 Saturday

Cubs Even Series at 2-2

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

An unearned run proved to be the difference as Iowa edged New Orleans 2-1 Saturday night at Zephyr Field.

Ronny Cedeno singled in Kevin Hart in the third for the Cubs first run and Eric Patterson scored an unearned tally on a double error by Zephyr center fielder Chad Hermansen, who committed his first two errors of the season on the play.

The Zephyrs plated their only run in the fourth on a Shawn Wooten single, but New Orleans left thirteen men on base, including eight in scoring position. Hermansen was twice retired with the bases loaded.

Kevin Hart (4-1) picked up the win despite six walks in six innings and Cubs manager Buddy Bailey explains his performance, "It's just lack of experience, as time goes on, he'll get better and better...it tells how good his stuff is when you have that many baserunners and they're unable to score because they didn't get that many hits."

Will Ohman, Cory Bailey, Clay Rapada and Rocky Cherry all followed with Cherry recording the last two outs for his sixth save. Cubs manager Bailey was impressed with Cherry's outing, "Rocky had as good of stuff as we've had out of him in awhile...his slider was big league quality." Iowa pitchers combined for eight walks and ten strikeouts.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies drop game one to Lookouts 6-5

Sevierville, TN – In a key match-up with Southern League playoff implications, the Tennessee Smokies gave up two runs to the Chattanooga Lookouts in the top of the seventh inning to propel the visiting team to a 6-5 win. An anxious crowd of 6,138 waited for another late game rally that never came for the Smokies, who dropped to 32-29 for the second half of the season. With the win, Chattanooga gained a game on the Smokies for the Northern Division title.

The Lookouts jumped on the Smokies early tonight, scoring two runs in the first inning to take the early lead off starting pitcher Mitch Atkins. A two-run double by Enrique Cruz staked Chattanooga to a 2-0 lead, but the Smokies answered right back with a run of their own in the first. Jorge Cortes, who went 2-5 on the night, scored on throwing error to pull the Smokies to within one run after one inning.

Chattanooga struck back with two more runs in the top of the third, thanks in part to a home run to deep center field by Danny Dorn, to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Once again, the Smokies answered right back in their half of the third inning. Atkins helped his own cause with a leadoff single, followed by another single off the bat of outfielder Sam Fuld. Cortes then drilled a towering home run to right field off Lookouts pitcher James Avery (10-10), his second of the season, to tie the contest at 4-4.

Both pitching staffs settled down for the next three innings, as neither team was able to plate a run until the top half of the seventh. With Matt Avery (2-2) on in relief, the Lookouts scored two runs on back-to-back RBI hits by Shaun Cumberland and Drew Anderson to give Chattanooga a 6-4 lead.

The Smokies, as with many of their games this year, would not go down without a fight however. By scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth off a Gary Cates RBI single, the Smokies pulled to within 6-5 going into the ninth. Fuld hit a one-out single to right field to give the Smokies a spark, but the fire went out when Fuld was picked off of first by a throw from Carlos Guevara. Cortes grounded out to first to end the game, notching Guevara his 16th save of the season for the Lookouts.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Four Chiefs Combine to No Hit Beloit

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs have played five seasons at O’Brien Field without throwing a no-hitter. That all changed on Saturday evening as James Russell, Chris Siegfried, Matt Maradeo and Jose Ceda combined to throw a no-hitter en route to shutting out Beloit 6-0 in front of 5,895 fans. The win improves the Chiefs to 34-27 on the half and keeps them just a game behind Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race in the Western Division.

Russell pitched three hitless innings in his Chiefs and Midwest League debut. He struck out four batters and issued one walk and left the game on a pitch count in just his second professional start. Siegfried worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season. Maradeo got the final two outs in the sixth and worked a hitless seventh inning to keep the no hit bid intact. Ceda came on for the final two innings and struck out four batters to finish off the no hitter. Despite not allowing a hit, Chiefs pitchers combined to walk six and hit three batters and Beloit picked up ten base runners with an error.

Peoria broke a scoreless game in the third inning against Snappers starter Brian Kirwan. Ryne Malone lined a single up the middle on the first pitch of the inning and Darwin Barney reached on an error by the third basemen to put runners on second and third with no outs. Marquez Smith picked up his tenth RBI as a Chief with a base hit to left to score Malone and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Russ Canzler added a sacrifice fly to score Barney to put the Chiefs in front 2-0. Wellington Castillo capped the inning by rocketing a 0-2 pitch from Kirwan just over the wall in left to extend the Chiefs lead to 4-0. The homer was his team leading 11th and third at O’Brien Field.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the fifth inning against Kirwan after Jim Adduci led the inning off with an infield single. After a ground out by Smith, Adduci moved into scoring position for Canzler who delivered his second RBI of the game with a base hit to make it 5-0 Chiefs.

Peoria continued to swing the bat well to start the seventh inning. Barney reached on an error for the second time in the game to start the inning. Addcui found the gap in left center and hustled into second for a double while Barney scored all the way from first to make it a 6-0 lead.

With the Chiefs up 6-0 heading into the ninth Ceda returned the mound for his second inning. He hit Wilson Ramos with a pitch before getting Chris Parmelee to fly out to shallow center for the first out. A walk to Joe Benson put two on before Ceda struck out Danny Berg looking for the second out. With 5,895 standing and clapping with every pitch Garrett Olson battled with two, two-strike foul balls. Ceda then fired a fastball past a swinging Olson to end the game and secure the first no-hitter in O’Brien Field history. Ceda was mobbed by his teammates on the mound as the team got a standing ovation as they left the field.

Gorman’s Pub Co-Players of the Games: James Russell, Chris Siegfried, Matt Maradeo and Jose Ceda (P) - The four Chiefs pitchers combined to throw the first Chiefs no hitter at O’Brien Field. They combined to strike out 11 batters and Beloit only got one batter to third base as they stranded seven.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 9 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 3 ½ games behind Quad Cities who lost to Cedar Rapids Saturday night. The Chiefs are now one game behind Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race. Kane County is 2 games back and Burlington 5 games behind Cedar Rapids. The Chiefs have two games (at home) left against Kane County, three games (at home) against Cedar Rapids and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton .

Notes… Sean Gallagher, Walt Nolen and Jon Hunton combined to throw the last Chiefs no-hitter on 4/20/05 in Cedar Rapids…

BoiseHawks.com"]Bears Walk Away with Victory, 6-2

YAKIMA, WA -- The Yakima Bears used six walks in the last two innings to beat the Boise Hawks Saturday night, 6-2. The Bears scored three runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth inning on two hits to pull even with the Hawks, one and one-half games behind the first place Spokane Indians who took over first place again with their win over the now-second place Tri-City Dust Devils.

Brandon Guyer, a late addition to the lineup, drove in both Boise runs with a double in the third inning and a single in the seventh. Both times Guyer evened the score in the game. The center fielder also threw a runner out on the bases, nailing Jo Jo Batten at third trying to stretch a double in the first inning. Luis Bautista had three hits for the Hawks for the second game in a row.

Starter Chris Huseby pitched well for Boise, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.

DFA him. He's just wasting a 40-man roster spot that could go to a real prospect like Koyie Hill. :D

Peoria Journal-Star"]When Siegfried and Russell, the starter, were in the game, a no-hitter was the furthest thing from their minds. Russell just tried to get through his three innings in his Midwest League debut.

"It set a good tone with a good start from Russell," Chiefs manager Ryne

Sandberg said. "It's too bad he was limited to so many pitches, but he gave us a boost."

Russell walked the first batter of the game, but struck out the next and escaped the inning with a double play. The left-hander struck out the side in the second and set Beloit down in order in the third.

"I had a bunch of adrenaline going. It took me a while to settle down," Russell said. "The second and third inning, I was fine."

...

Ceda got into trouble in the ninth by hitting Wilson Ramos and then walking Joe Benson with one out. But he got Danny Berg to look at a breaking pitch for the second out. He set him up with 90-plus mph fastballs.

"We called for fastballs when he would be up in the count," catcher Wellington Castillo said. "His breaking ball has come around and it's a good pitch now."

Russell, the newcomer, was impressed. "That's the first time I've seen him. He throws gas."

Once Ceda entered the game to start the eighth, the drama started to build even though, or maybe because, Ceda had not allowed a hit in his previous 17 innings. All of them have been in relief after beginning the season as a starter.

"I'm starting to feel more comfortable now coming in as a reliever," Ceda said. "I hope they let me continue (to relieve after this season)."

Is Ceda the guy we got for Todd Walker a couple years ago? If so, it's really starting to look like we made out well in that trade.
