Brian Dopirak is in Daytona's lineup today - it looks like he made it through waivers and got back to the Cubs.

Mitch Atkins had a scoreless first inning for Tennessee. Tennessee up 3-0 on a Kyle Reynolds 3-run HR.

Oh, Tyler Colvin is back off the DL and in Tennessee's lineup today. He's 1/3 with a triple so far. Atkins had a good first two innings in his first AA start and then got rocked in the third. His final line: 3 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 1 K/0 BB, HBP, HR.

Marcus Hatley got the start for Mesa. Wish I knew what happened to Oswaldo Martinez, he hasn't pitched in about a month.

Some VERY interesting comments after Daytona's game yesterday:

http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/Sports/Headlines/sptCUBS01080807.htm

Tuesday night the Cubs put up four errors and scored only one run. Could it be that with the season winding down that players aren't as motivated as they were earlier in the season?

"You hope that's not the case," said Cubs manager Jody Davis. "We're so thin player-wise there's no competition to play. They know this is what we got. They have to go out there. But if that's the way they're going to play, they probably should be looking for something else to do.

"It ought to be pretty much the exact opposite, because there's a pretty good bunch (of players) below us and a pretty good bunch above us. This would be the time to fight for some attention."

There was little fight in the Cubs after the Miracle broke a one-run tie with a three-run sixth inning. Joel Santo (8-6), who had matched Miracle starter Jay Rainville (6-10) through five innings, gave up three runs on two hits, and failed to cover home on a wild pitch that yielded one of those runs.

Good deal, I think he's still got a chance to turn into a decent power hitter, he's played very well this 2nd half, and he's only 23, so it's not like he's out of time.

Ryan Harvey...starting to turn it on. Hopefully this is more the result of him getting healthier and starting to feel more comfortable than him just being on a hot streak.

Everyday I open one of these threads, Soto has a multi hit game. It's insane.

Not today...he had two multi-hit games today!

18-year old infielder Marwin Gonzalez is back after suffering a fractured wrist on a HBP right before the Mesa season started. Marwin was one of the better hitters in extended spring training this season and split last season between Mesa and the DSL despite being age 17...he sounds like an intriguing prospect.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Split With 51s

Iowa Records Fifth Shutout

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

The rain held off long enough Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park for the Iowa Cubs to split with the Las Vegas 51s, 4-5 and 5-0.

Las Vegas began game one, which was suspended by rain Tuesday night, with a 3-1 lead and the Cubs were unable to recover. Iowa scored two in the fifth inning but Las Vegas answered back with two runs in the sixth inning for the 5-4 victory.

Matt Craig was a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI and a home run and Geovany Soto collected four hits in the two games. Craig's home run was his first with Iowa.

Cory Bailey (4-2) led Iowa to its fifth shutout of the year in game two throwing five innings and allowing six hits. Miguel Pinango (7-7) took the loss for the 51s.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Reynolds & Smokies bullpen serve up 6-5 win

Sevierville, TN – Kyle Reynolds hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and the bullpen preserved a one run lead for five innings as the Tennessee Smokies downed the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx by a score of 6-5 on Wednesday night in front of 2,509 fans. With the win, the Smokies kept pace for the 2nd half division title and playoff spot, improving to 24-22 for the second half.

The Smokies got the offense going early on in the contest tonight, thanks largely in part to Reynolds. Jemel Spearman led off the game with a single to left field. After a fielder’s choice groundout by Jorge Cortes, Casey McGehee walked to put runners at first and second. Reynolds strode to the plate after a Tyler Colvin pop out and deposited a monster shot over the right field wall to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead.

Tennessee benefited from another three runs in the bottom half of the second to increase their lead over the visiting Diamond Jaxx. After recording two consecutive strikeouts, Diamond Jaxx starting pitcher Travis Chick (4-5) ran into all sorts of trouble. Spearman drilled a home run over the left field wall, his fifth of the season, to give the Smokies a four run lead. After a Cortes two-out single, McGehee smacked a triple off the left center field wall to bring him home. Tyler Colvin then hit another rocket off the left center field wall for back-to-back Smokies triples, and Tennessee had staked a 6-0 lead over West Tennessee.

West Tennessee would not go down quietly however, finally getting to Smokies starting pitcher Mitch Atkins in top of the third. A three-run home run off the bat of Carlton Jimerson got the Diamond Jaxx back into the game, cutting the Smokies lead to 6-4 after three innings. The Diamond Jaxx added another run in the fourth inning to pull to within 6-5.

The Smokies offense would not score a run for the rest of the game, and relied heavily on the bullpen to preserve the lead during the late innings. They did just that on a collaborative effort between Grant Johnson (1-1), Jim Henderson, and Geoff Jones. Johnson went 2 1/3 scoreless innings, Henderson struck out three of the six batters he faced, and Jones retired the last two batters for his seventh save of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]rustrating Series Ends with 9-8 Loss

Cubs Overcome 7-0 Deficit, Still Lose Fifth Straight

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Daytona Cubs came all the way back from an early 7-0 hole, but the Fort Myers Miracle found a way to emerge with a 9-8 win Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The loss capped a four-game sweep for Fort Myers; the Cubs' losing streak extended to five games.

Down 7-0 after the second inning, the Cubs put up three runs in each of the second and third innings. Daytona put single runs on the board in the fifth and sixth to tie the game and take the lead, but an RBI single by Johnny Woodard in the top of the ninth gave the Miracle a lead they would never relinquish.

The loss spoiled another productive night for Ryan Harvey, who went 3-for-5 with another home run. Harvey scored three times and drove in a pair. Matt Matulia stayed hot with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs scored. Every Daytona hitter reached base in the defeat.

The Miracle dashed to an early lead with a furious two-out rally in the top of the second. Daytona starter Greg Reinhard retired the first five batters of the game, but then eight consecutive Fort Myers hitters reached safely. A double by Johnny Woodard plated Danny Valencia to open the scoring. After a walk to Dwayne White, Jeff Christy singled to left to make it 2-0. Brian Dinkelman drew another walk to load the bases for Steve Tolleson. He grounded a ball that was booted by the third baseman to allow every runner to move up, and the Miracle led 3-0. Erik Lis and Dustin Martin followed with back-to-back two-run doubles, and the lead ballooned to 7-0.

The Cubs started chipping away in the bottom of the second. Ryan Harvey and Matt Matulia opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and Alfred Joseph scored Harvey with a double over the left-fielder's head. Billy Mottram plated Matulia on an RBI groundout, and Mark Reed followed with a run-scoring infield single to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Daytona kept the heat on with another three-run frame in the third. Brian Dopirak doubled off the wall in right-center and scored when his high-school teammate, Ryan Harvey, blasted a home run to left to shrink the deficit to 7-5. The next pitch, Matulia dragged a base-hit bunt. The throw to first was errant and Matulia moved to second. He stole third, then scored on an RBI single by Joseph which made it a one-run game.

The Cubs clawed their way back to an even score in the fifth without a hit or a ball leaving the infield. Harvey swung and missed at strike three, but the ball got away from the catcher and Harvey reached safely. Matulia followed with a walk. Joseph moved the runners up on a groundout to the right side, and Mottram scored Harvey on an RBI groundout to tie the score at 7-7.

Daytona vaulted into the lead in the sixth. Jonathan Mota and Steve Clevenger started the frame with back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners, Dopirak chopped an RBI groundout to third base as Mota scored the go-ahead run to make it an 8-7 Cubs lead.

As the Daytona offense did its job, so did reliever Darin Downs. The lefty worked four scoreless innings, gave up just three hits, struck out three and didn't walk a batter. He didn't figure in the decision, as Fort Myers slugged its way back into the game in the top of the ninth.

Lis started the inning with a single. Martin followed by slashing a double down the line in left, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Yusdel Tuero struck out the next batter and loaded the bases by walking Valencia. But Woodard stroked a single to right to tie the game. Dwayne White's sacrifice fly plated Martin to give the Miracle a 9-8 advantage.

The Cubs made it interesting in the ninth, putting the first two men on base via a single by Harvey and a walk by Matulia, but the runners never moved as a bunt attempt by Yusuf Carter was popped up and caught on a diving grab by Dinkelman. The next two batters were retired by Rob Delaney without the runners moving to end the game. Delaney picked up the win, improving to 2-0.

Fort Myers is now above .500 at 24-23 as it leaves Daytona.

Tuero (0-2) absorbed the loss for Daytona, now 18-28 in the second half.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Win 3-1 Wednesday

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs snapped a four game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the visiting Great Lakes Loons at O’Brien Field. The win moves the Chiefs to 25-20 in the second half and 56-58 overall and they remain in the Wild Card spot in the Western Division.

The Chiefs offense got a much needed boost in the third inning. Catcher Wellington Castillo homered on a 3-1 pitch out to left field to put the Chiefs up 1-0. Nate Samson doubled down the left field line followed by an infield single by Leon Johnson to put runners on the corners with one out. The rally was cut short after Darwin Barney was robbed of a base hit on a diving play by Loons third basemen Josh Bell and Jim Adduci grounded out to second to end the inning.

Great Lakes finally got to Chiefs starter Michael Bartek in the fifth inning after he issued a leadoff walk to Juan Rivera. Matt Berezay doubled to the gap in left center to score Rivera all the way from first base to tie the game 1-1. The run was the first allowed by Bartek in 8 2/3 innings as a starter.

Peoria got back-to-back singles from Castillo and Ryne Malone in the fifth inning but Castillo was thrown out trying to move to third base. Loons starter Steven Johnson rebounded to strike out Samson and got Johnson to ground out to end in the inning.

The Chiefs got to the Loons bullpen in the bottom of the eighth inning. Johnson bunted a hard ball back to the pitcher Thomas Melgarejo that bounced off the mound and went for an infield single. Barney followed with a walk and then a single by Adduci loaded the bases with one out. The Great Lakes defense then committed what turned out to be a costly error. Russ Canzler grounded into what looked to be an inning ending 6-4-3 double play but the shortstop Adolfo Gonzalez misplayed the ball and two runs to score to make it 3-1.

The Loons tried to rally against Alex Maestri in the ninth inning after he issued a walk to Rick Taloa. Scott Van Slyke lined a shot down the left-field line but got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double. With pinch runner Preston Mattingly on at third and two outs, Masetri came back to strike out Juan Apodaca to end the ball game.

In just his second professional start Bartek tossed five innings while allowing just one run on three hits while walking three and striking out one. Casey Lambert came out of the bullpen and tossed three perfect innings. He struck out three batters and issued just one walk en route to picking up his first win as a Chief. Maestri worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his eighth save in nine chances.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Casey Lambert (LHP) - Lambert entered a 1-1 game in the sixth inning and responded by tossing three shutout innings. Casey issued just one walk and struck out three batters while picking up his first win of the season and lowering his ERA to 2.21.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 25 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 2 ½ games behind Quad Cities who won on Wednesday afternoon. The Chiefs remain 1 ½ games up on Kane County who also won Wednesday night. The Chiefs have six games (four at home) left against Kane County and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton .

Last season he had a horrible first half and turned it around at the end of the season. For whatever that's worth.

Wow Harvey doing well?

Seriously?

Nice AVG and SLG over the course of a week, but he's still got a 8:1 K:BB ratio and he's about to turn 23 and is repeating A ball. A guy with power and talent like that is going to look good over short bursts (like many Cubs), but his biggest flaws are what keep him from maintaining any conssitency and having a chance to succeed at higher levels.
