In '98 were people talking much about steroids? I only remember McGwire's andro (which I hear was purposely put out on his locker b/c he was on the real stuff).

Nope. It was all "oh my God, thank God for this, baseball was pretty much dying after the strike."

Man that is the quintessential picture of the ballooning Bonds. Man is his head going to explode?

No one suspected anything?

Oh, it's not like everyone, including a lot of fandom, were running around in the dark...nobody was just really talking about it. We were all too enamored with the longballs. Just shrug it off with cutesy comments about Flintstone's Vitamins and focus on the awesome jacks.

But remember, NOW it's the worst thing ever.

You don't know Mark Silva, but you know his work. As a certified orthotist, Silva is one of the top builders of custom sports braces for athletes. He's made them for football players in his work with the San Francisco 49ers, and he's made them for baseball players, including Rickey Henderson and Mo Vaughn. It's the brace that Barry Bonds wears while batting that Silva is best known for.

...

It's the molds that bring forth the most interesting fact regarding Bonds since Game of Shadows was published. Silva states that because of the custom nature of the work, he's been asked to make casts of Bonds each year. In the first couple of years, he went through the entire process, but due to his workload, he started checking Bonds with precision calipers each subsequent year. "If I made the same brace every year for 12 or more years," Silva said, "it was because there was no size change in Barry's arms."

You read that correctly--the man who not only builds Bonds' brace, but who has taken precision measurements of his arm since 1992, has not seen any increase in the size of Bonds' arm. Point blank, Silva said "there's been no significant change in the size of his arms."

yeah, but looking at the above picture...you would have to be looney to think his arms didn't get bigger...look at the size of his biceps in the first picture

Seems plausible.

Who cares. All of this talk is speculation and nothing else. Guess and make assumptions based on pictures but for me, I don't care. You can take all the enhancements that you can but they won't make you hit 756 home runs. That is an accomplishment that is hard to beat.

The crap that he has had to put up with will be looked back on as nearly as bad as what others have had to go through when they do something amazing. Our society has to tear someone down while they are doing something extraordinary, only to build them up higher then ever after it is too late.

Count me as one who won't tear him down for things that we know nothing about. I will always admire his achievement and not let his personality or hyperbolic assumptions based on nothing but circumstantial evidence cloud the real achievement here.

Barry Bonds has done something that no man has done before and that is set a remarkable record of power in MLB. He single handily changes ever game he plays in and continues to do so even as his immense skills decline. When he is inducted into the hall of fame, i encourage him to merely look at everyone at Cooperstown and say thanks and fade quietly away. Only then will all this "hate" will fade away and 10 years later, an expose will begin to soften his persona ala Mickey Mantle & Ted Williams and hold him in the same conversation as these 2 greats.

At the press conference:

Pedro Gomez: "What about the controversy surrounding the homerun?"

Barroid: "There's always going to be controversy Pedro, that's the only thing that comes out of your vocal chords."

can we all just be happy that bonds broke the record?

can we all be sure that hank aaron wasn't staurating himself with gamma rays before every ballgame? the answer is no. come on, his wrists were as big as rob reiner's prostate for crying out loud, don't tell me that's all natural.

Eh, I'm happy for him. Personally, I think the thread that was posted Monday detailing all the ways his arm brace ("hitting machine") helped his swing sheds more light on his production numbers than his steroid use does.

It talked about how it levels his swing, prevents him from extending, and all sorts of other mechanics analysis. The two most intriguing (and coincidentally most circumstantial) points were that the current model of armor first appeared in 2001, the year he hit 73 HR, and that he has an impeccable way of avoiding homerun derbies, which do not require front arm protection.

Any way you cut it, none of it negates the fact that hitting a homerun, regardless of steroids or armor, is a difficult thing to do and Bonds is now the most successful batter in history for that particular statistic. Now we can all enjoy moving on with our lives.

That was actually rather funny.

People can defend the steroid use all they want, but I don't know how people defend the fact that he has absolutely zero interest in winning a baseball game. He left after he got his hit tonight when the game was 5-4. He left last night after the 7th when the score was 1-1. Does anyone in San Francisco actually care about, you know, winning?

Matt Morris would say no.

I guess his new mantra with the Pirates is "better to have cared and lost, than to have never cared at all."

What does "no significant change in the size of his arms" mean anyway? Steroids or not his arms are going to get bigger as he ages because he's working out. There's not a chance that his arms didn't get bigger.
