There was some part deep down inside me that thought Krivsky had some decent GM skills.

That changed today.

Jon Coutlangus (age 26)

2007: 3.93 ERA, 36.2 IP, 32 K

Todd Coffey (age 26)

2007: 6.04 ERA, 36 K, 45 IP

Mike Stanton (Age 40)

5.03 IP, 27 K, 39 IP

Gary Makjewski (Age 27)

MLB: 15.88 ERA, 5.2 IP, 3 K

AAA: 3.96 ERA, 38.2 IP, 30 K

Brad Salmon (Age 27)

MLB: 3.92 ERA, 20.2 IP, 18 K

AAA: 3.28 ERA, 24 IP, 23 K

I'll let you pick 2. Not a real brain teaser is it? If you're answer wasn't Salmon and Coutlangus you need help.

Now I bring you this:

TODAY'S TRANSACTIONS: Today the Reds optioned to Louisville LHP Jon Coutlangus; placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Friday, IF/OF Ryan Freel (torn cartilage, right knee); recalled from Louisville RHP Gary Majewski; returned from a rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 60-day disabled list LHP Eddie Guardado (left elbow surgery, lower back); sent to Louisville on a rehabilitation assignment OF Josh Hamilton (sprained right wrist).

This Now brings the Reds bullpen to:

Jared Burton 3.54 ERA

Todd Coffey 6.05 ERA

Mike Gosling 4.35 ERA

Eddie Guardado ---

Gary Majewski 15.88 ERA

Victor Santos 4.50 ERA

Mike Stanton 5.03 ERA

David Weathers 3.40 ERA

The Reds have 4 bullpen pitchers with ERA's under 4, and half of them are in AAA (Coutlangus and Burton). How does that make any sense? Did I mention we are carrying 13 pitchers? We have no backup outfielders.

Now I present this from the Reds beat writer. Remember this is not a fan, this is a beat writer.

Um... yeah. Wow. OK...

We talked to Pete and talked to Wayne.

Asked Pete why Todd Coffey was still here. Basically his answer was, "talk to Wayne."

So, I talked to Wayne. Here's what he had to say:

"Like I said, we’re going with the 13 guys right now that we think are the best 13 in whatever length of time it is. I don’t want to talk about individuals, but he’s not the only one that’s struggling."

"Two intelligent minds can agree to disagree on the moves, I’m just trying to give you our explanation on the moves, you guys are entitled to your opinion, and I respect it as long as you hear mine and you can make your own conclusions. There’s one GM, one maanger and one pitching coach, we tried to put all our heads together and come up with what makes sense."

"Everyone’s entitled to an opinion."

Well, my opinion is it's stupid. And here's why. Here's Wayne on why they have 13 pitchers (which I actually understand, it's just that those pitchers are who they are is what I disagree with)

Krvisky:

"Many times it’s to protect the other pitchers so you can use the right guys whether you’re winning or losing. If you’re going to lose a game and are way behind, you can stay behind and be ready for the next game. There’s an expression among veteran managers, 'you’ve got to learn how to lose a game, too.' There’s a lot of truth in that so you’re prepared to win the next one. It gives Pete a little extra flexibility with his bullpen, and we’ll see how long we go with 13, I don’t have the answer."

So, basically, with Harang and his back, Dumatrait and Belisle, as well as Livingston, Wayne's basically saying he's expecting to lose some games. So, you know, at least he has some pitchers that will help him lose games if they're ready to pack in a game. But hey, $1 hot dogs!

It's a bad, bad statement to throw out there. I didn't think too much of the fire Krivsky sentiment until now, this is the final straw. It's the dumbest thing I've seen since Juan Castro batting for Josh Hamilton. There's no reason asking Wayne about Dunn's option, because it's not going to be his decision to make.

We can only hope the last line is true, because I give up.

what's the point of keeping a washed-up mike stanton? they should just release him or try to trade him, and call up a young guy who can spend the rest of the year in the bigs. Might as well experiment for next year, b/c this year is over for the Reds.

Bill Bavasi still gives Krivsky a fight for the title. Rafael Soriano hasn't exactly lit the world on fire, but he's still been a lot more useful than Horacio Ramirez.

That was a hilariously bad trade.

Rafael Soriano for a decent lefty who can't stay healthy? Awful.

I think Ned Colletti is very underrated, at least when it comes to the awful GM conversation. A rich farm system and large payroll are really masking what a moron he is, IMO.

I agree. The Dodgers will likely fair well over the next few season because of the farm system (I'm assuming Colletti won't trade them all away like Betemit for Procter, ugh). The large payroll will help, too, though not tons if he keeps signing guys like Juan Pierre to big deals. The guy is terrible.

I love it, more DoPo love. We have seen that in a while. You'd be better off hoping the Cards hire DoPo.

Hey, he was in Moneyball and is friends with Billy Beane. He has to be a great GM.

I don't know. The Pirates trades for Izturis and Matt Morris. That's beyond analysis.

Haven't read Moneyball. But I'm capable of seeing the success the Dodgers had after two seasons of Depodesta.

isn't that the book Billy Beane wrote?

I thought Joe Morgan wrote it?

An 88 win season and a winning percentage around .535 over 1+ years? Jim Hendry has also accomplished this feat, but I doubt anyone would call him a success

It was written before this season, so you'll have to add in Brad Penny's Cy Young credentials this year before making a conclusion.
