Tejada deal falls through with ChiSox

GM Kenny Williams offered a polite "no comment'' Monday when asked about an ESPN report that the White Sox claimed Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada off waivers. The Sox have shot down Tejada trade rumors the past few seasons. According to ESPN, the White Sox and the Orioles were unable to work out a trade after the waiver claim. Tejada, who recently returned from a wrist injury that kept him out a month, is owed $26 million over the next two seasons. If there was some interest from the White Sox, it likely was based on Baltimore taking struggling starting pitcher Jose Contreras, who is owed $20 million over the next two seasons. -- Daily Herald

I think Kenny Williams ought to get a gig at Zanies. People think we come up with crazy trade rumors.

Seems pretty safe to assume that KW wasn't proposing that as a straight-up trade.

Contreras would simply be a salary-balancer.

And it's the Orioles. Gave up Jorge Julio and John Maine fro Kris Benson . . . might as well see if they'd like Contreras. It was an offer, anyways. Of course KW will start by including Jose -- he'd almost be silly not to.

edit: imagine if Hendry tried to unload Marquis on the Birds for Miggy... sure it's not a great final offer. But I know myself and others would applaud the effort and appreciate it as, at least, a starting point.

That's even worse, sending them a player that has no value and then making them pay $20 million. Why doesn't he just tell the Orioles that he will take Miggy off their hands and they can pay his salary.

He was probably just trying to block the Indians and Tigers. While the Sox are already well out of it, if either of them scored Miggy, the Sox would be screwed for the next 5 years.

The Sox are pretty much screwed for the next few years. They are clearly not as good or as young as the Indians, Tigers, and Twins. Unless the Sox throw up the white flag and trade players like Garland/Vasquez, Dye, and Konerko now or during the offseason, they won't be doing much for the next few years.

By "they" do you mean the White Sox, or the Orioles?

Because suggesting that the Orioles would be better off just paying Tejada's $26M instead of taking Contreras and his $20M back seems quite strange. Worst case is they simply DFA Contreras, and end up $6M ahead.

Tejada isn't the force he once was. I don't think he alone would be why the WS was screwed.

Would the Indians or Tigers be interested in Miggy? Cleveland has Jhonny Peralta and Detroit has Carlos Guillen.

Peralta's not exactly setting the world on fire, but is only 25 and had a very good to great 23-year-old season.

Guillen is better than Miggy and cheaper.

Of course, now that I look at the Indians, they could move him to second to replace Barfield - who's been horrifically bad. The only interest I could see the Tigers having in him is a move to third - not sure he'd do that though.

tejada's not good enough to screw the opponent of any team he plays for next year, let alone five years from now.
