IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Outlast 51s 9-8 Sunday

By Toby Hyde / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs survived a grueling three hour twenty-two minute contest Sunday with a 9-8 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 8,097 fans at Principal Park.

After the 51s scored two runs in the top of the first, the Cubs tallied three runs in the bottom half on RBI singles from Geovany Soto and Matt Craig sandwiched around a sacrifice fly by shortstop Joe Simokaitis, to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Soto drilled a home run to centerfield in the second inning to increase Iowa’s advantage to 5-2. Cubs’ pitcher J.R. Mathes, batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third chased Las Vegas starter Eric Cyr from the game by flaring a single to shallow right-center field, driving home two runs to put Iowa ahead 7-3.

Felix Pie singled sharply into right-center to bring home a run in the fifth and Geovany Soto bounced a single through the left side in the seventh plating Eric Patterson to complete the Cubs’ scoring.

Iowa withstood a late 51s’ rally as Las Vegas scored four times in the final two innings to close within a run. However, Iowa closer Clay Rapada induced a line drive from Wilkin Ruan to end the game and wrap up his 16th save.

Mathes, who started for Iowa, allowed four runs in five innings for his team-leading ninth win of 2007.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies rally falls just short in 11-8 loss

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies, after being down by as many as five runs, mounted a valiant comeback against the visiting Montgomery Biscuits to tie the game. But a three-run seventh propelled the Biscuits to an 11-8 win over the Smokies in front of 4,914 fans on Sunday night to drop Tennessee to 22-22 for the second half of the season. The Smokies logged in fifteen hits on the night, but it was not enough to overcome the potent Montgomery offense.

For the second straight night, the Biscuit hitters jumped on top of the Smokies early in the first inning. Fernando Perez crushed a lead-off homer off of Smokies starting pitcher Ryan O’Malley to straight away center field to give Montgomery a 1-0 advantage. Montgomery plated three more runs in the inning off of O’Malley, two of them coming off a Rhyne Hughes double, and the Smokies found themselves down 4-0.

Tennessee looked to get back into the contest in the bottom half of the second inning however. Jemel Spearman led off the inning with a triple to get things going for Tennessee. Spearman scored on the next play thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Nate Spears. The Smokies plated another run on a Robinson Chirinos fielders choice ground out that scored Spears. Despite having additional chances, that would be all the Smokies could muster in the inning, cutting the Biscuits lead to 4-2.

Montgomery plated another run in the third, followed by two more in the fourth to take a seemingly commanding 7-2 lead. That is when the Smokies offense got going. An RBI single by Kyle Reynolds pulled the Smokies to within four runs after the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Tennessee closed the gap to just two runs after solo home runs by both Nate Spears and Robinson Chirinos made the score 7-5.

The Smokies tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning thanks in part to three consecutive singles with one out off the bats of Reynolds, Alan Rick, and Issmael Salas. With the bases loaded, Jemel Spearman delivered once again with a two RBI single to score Reynolds and Rick, which tied the game at 7-7. An inning ending double play by Spears killed the rally however, but the damage had been done by the Smokies offense.

The Biscuits bats woke back up again in the next inning however. Newly acquired Smokies pitcher Mitch Atkins (0-1) came on in relief, his first appearance as a reliever this season. Montgomery got to Atkins in the inning, the most notable a two-RBI double from Patrick Breen. When it was all said and done, the Biscuits had a 10-7 lead.

That would be all the Biscuits would need on the night. Despite another solo home run from Rick, his second as a Smokie, Tennessee could not surmount the late three run lead. Richard De Los Santos (2-4) notched the win in relief for Montgomery, with Dale Thayer recording his twenty first save of the season.

Cubs Lose Second Straight in Extras

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] For the second straight night, the Daytona Cubs dropped an extra-innings affair at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Fort Myers Miracle dumped the Cubs, 5-4, in 12 innings. The Miracle bullpen pitched ten innings and allowed just three runs, all unearned. Daytona left 15 men on base.

The Cubs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but could not score. Fort Myers plated the eventual winning run in the 12th on Steve Tolleson's RBI double.

Brian Dopirak powered the offense for Daytona as he drove in three runs. For the second straight night, Dopirak doubled and homered. Alfred Joseph chipped in with a 4-for-6 night.

Fort Myers hit Daytona starter Paul Schappert hard early in the game. Tolleson and Dustin Martin belted back-to-back home runs in the top of the first. Later in the inning, Eddie Ovalle's triple plated Danny Valencia from first to make it a 3-0 Miracle lead.

The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the first. Steve Clevenger reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Dopirak banged a double off the wall in center field for a two-out RBI double.

Errors by Fort Myers reliever David Shinskie opened the door for a big bottom of the fifth. Shinskie bobbled a bunt attempt by Matt Matulia to start the inning. An errant pickoff throw allowed Matulia to move to second, and when Jonathan Mota laid down a sacrifice bunt, Shinskie threw the ball away to allow Matulia to score and cut the deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Dopirak belted a two-run homer to left field to give the Cubs a 4-3 advantage.

The Miracle tied the game in the top of the eighth against reliever Tim Layden. Tolleson walked to lead off the frame. A single by Juan Portes scored Tolleson to tie the game at 4-4.

Rob Delaney picked up the win for the Miracle for his first decision of the season, while Adam Hawes notched his first save. Fort Myers is now 21-23 in the second half.

Darin Downs dropped to 3-4 with the loss. The Cubs fell to 18-15.

PeoriaChiefs.com"] Chiefs Get Blasted 12-4

Lansing, MI – After back to back pitchers duels, the Peoria Chiefs allowed 12 runs on 18 hits Sunday in a 12-4 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-5 on the roadtrip and 24-18 on the second half.

Lansing wasted no time in getting on the board. Scott Campbell led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer into the right field berm. The homer marked the third time this season Campbell has led off a game with a homer and he became the third straight batter to hit a solo homer off Chiefs starter Jake Renshaw dating back to Tuesday’s game.

The Lugnuts added to their lead in the second. Matt Liuzza drew a four pitch walk to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Matt Lane. Renshaw induced a 3-6 double play off the bat of Jonathan Baksh, but Liuzza scored on the play for a 2-0 Lansing lead.

Peoria loaded the bases in the third inning but failed to score against Lansing starter Kyle Ginley. Blake Lalli led off the fourth inning with his second hit of the game and moved to second on a single by Wellington Castillo. After strikeout, Russ Canzler walked to load the bases and Leon Johnson struck out looking. Nate Samson drew a bases loaded, two-out walk to force in a run as the Chiefs cut the lead to 2-1 but Peoria still left the bases loaded.

In the fifth, Darwin Barney reached on a one-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two down, Castillo tied the game with a double off the left field wall.

The game didn’t stay tied long as Lansing rallied with two down against Renshaw in their half of the fifth inning. Campbell started the rally with a single to center and he scored when Chris Emanuele singled to left on a 3-2 pitch. Emanuele moved to second on the throw home and scored moments later on a Travis Snider single for 4-2 Lansing lead.

Canzler led off the Chiefs sixth with a triple and scored on a groundout by Johnson. But again the Chiefs hurlers gave runs right back to the Lugnuts. Michael Bartek relieved Renshaw and issued a leadoff walk to Liuzza. Lane ad Baksh reached on back to back singles to load the bases with no outs. Jonathan Diaz unloaded the bases with a three-run double over the head of leftfielder Ryne Malone for a 7-3 Lansing lead.

The Chiefs added a solo run in the top of the seventh. Jim Adduci led off with a tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Barney to cut the lead to 7-4. Lansing again responded in their half of the inning. With one out, Sean Shoffit homered off Bartek for an 8-4 lead. Liuzza knocked Bartek from the game with a double and scored when Lane doubled off Matt Maradeo. Lansing added three more runs in the ninth though only two were earned.

Renshaw suffers his second loss in a row and drops to 11-7 on the season. The All-Star allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked two while allowing a leadoff homer. Bartek gave up five runs on five hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings. Maradeo finished the game allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Russ Canzler (1B) – Canzler picked up his team leading 9th 3-hit game gong 3-for-4 with a walk. Canzler tripled and scored in the sixth while adding two singles.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 28 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, ½ game behind Quad Cities and 2 ½ games up on Kane County . The Chiefs have six games (four at home) left against Kane County and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

BoiseHawks.com"] Eugene Beats Hawks, 8-2

The Eugene Emeralds beat the Boise Hawks Sunday night, 8-2. Four Eugene pitchers combined to limit the Hawks to two runs on seven hits. Robert Woodard got the win with three innings of shut out relief.

The Emeralds jumped all over Julio Castillo for three runs on four hits in the first inning, the only inning he would pitch. Brandon Taylor worked four innings, John Muller threw three and Bill Moss came in from second base to retire three batters in the ninth inning. Luis Durango had four hits for the Emeralds who had 12 hits on the night.

Tony Thomas had a double and a triple for Boise and Jonathan Wyatt extended hit hitting streak to 11 games with a third inning triple.
