hypothetically, now that we see what Atl gave up, what do you think Z would have brought had the Cubs not turned it around and he had. 14 wins going into deadline with a lot of teams wanting pitching. Who or what teams would have got involved?

I think what it took to get Tex would probably be a starting point. Honestly, I bet it would have taken two guys who are either breaking into the majors (Kemp/Billingsley), one guy who is close (LaRoche), and then one guy in the low minors with ubertalent (Kershaw).

I can't imagine what offers would have been thrown around if Buehrle/Z/Garland/Vazquez/Hill were on the market instead of veteran garbage like Matt Morris.

One thing to keep in mind is Tex is under contract for another year after this one; on the other hand, Z would be the textbook definition of a rent-a-player. That said, 26-year old aces don't go on the market very often.

I think it's important to keep in mind that while we may received some fantastic prospects, the loss of Z would leave a huge hole in the rotation.

Yeah, gotta take into account Tex's other year of his deal. Z is a FA after this year. A team like LAD or LAA who is in a large market and knows they can pay him the money he wants would probably give up more than Atlanta or Arizona would have.

Would have been tough to get Billingsley from LAD though.

That wouldn't have been such a factor if the Cubs were out of contention, which is what this hypothetical discussion is based on.

Justin Upton and Stephen Drew.

Man, and then the Cubs could resign Z next year....

Justin Upton will never get traded from the D'Backs. He will be in Arizona til he leaves as a free agent or retires.

Ya think so?

Nah, I was just kidding.

I don't think they would give up that kind of talent without ensuring they could have signed Z to a long term deal....
