I'd love that deal. At least Payton can get on base at a decent clip without first making you suffer through an 0 for 25 streak. Plus, Payton is in his walk year and Jones still has a yr on his contract.

Explain to me why this would be a bad deal for us.

EDIT: And by "get on base at a decent clip" I mean against left-handers.

Payton is not in his walk year first of all-he also has another year left on his contract.

Payton has had 0 seasons in the last 4 over a 95 OPS+, Jones has had 2.

Jones has the better chance to rebound to be something pretty good, while Payton is simply an expensive bench player at this point. If you look at 08 (when Floyd will almost certainly not be re-signed) who would you rather have as the 4th OF?

I don't think it's a terrible deal for the Cubs, but it's not a good deal either.

Is everyone just ignoring my second edit?

Are we expected to just keep going back to re-read your posts because you decide to edit them over and over again?

The question is whether Pie with a little Payton sprinkled in is better than Jones with Pagan getting time.

Doesn't that depend on whether or not Jones' numbers trend up toward his career norms?

For the record, if trading for Payton meant we'd actually see Pie play, I'd do it.

It would depend on quite a few things. It could depend on whether Jones improves, but Payton could conceivably improve as well. Depends on how Pie would handle the time, or if he even got time. Obviously if they traded Jones for Payton to become the starting CF, I don't think you're any better off. But the Cubs need guys who can hit lefties, and Payton can.

While the Baltimore Sun has picked up the Payton rumor for 2 "mid-level" prospects, my source insists Jones is still part of this discussion.

By the way, the Cubs also had a recent conversation with the Twins about sending Jones and a prospect for Hunter. Supposedly it was a short call.

i quite honestly do not understand the reasoning behind this at all

jones is 31...payton is 34

what the crap?

The Cubs seem to believe that baseball ethics demand that they trade Jones. Their goal is to do what's best for the player while doing minimal damage to the team. While they would like to upgrade on-field performance while helping Jones move on, it does not seem like it is a requirement.

Think of the Maddux trade last year: while Jimbo clearly believed that Izturis was a valuable player, he also gave the impression that he considered Maddux to be a better value. As he had at the time of the Corey Patterson deal, he spoke as though he saw himself as having a responsibility to look after Maddux's interests.

Seems to me that the Cubs want Pie in CF, but he struggles against LHP.

Jones has played well, but cannot hit LHP.

Therefore, they need someone to platoon.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have a feeling that Hendry didn't say, "screw the rest of the players in the majors. I want Jay Payton and Jay Payton only. End of story!"

I think it is a matter of the club needing to fill a hole. They can't be too picky.

Payton would serve the roll of platoon player much better than Jones. It would allow Pie to get the bulk of the playing time.
