don't wanna bombard you with questions, but do you think the Cubs are going to stand pat at the deadline like Lou said, Bruce? If not, who do you see them getting?

It's so hard to tell because it takes two sides to make a deal no matter how logical they sound when we cook them up here. Both teams got to want to do it. I'd look for something smaller-scale but no blockbuster. (Subject to change, of course.)

Hey Bruce, any word on if they're putting Murton in RF everyday, or will he go back to 2-3 games on followed by PH for a week?

I think he, and the Cubs, would be better off with him in the lineup everyday. That is, unless they shock us all and get Griffey.

I don't think they're getting Griffey. Lou will let us know in a few minutes what the plan is.

yeah, good point, and most teams seem to be keeping quiet about who they want/who they are going to deal

thanks Bruce

boy, you know you're overly optimistic when a "I don't think..." is taken as a positive. AT LEAST BRUCE DIDN'T SAY WE'RE NOT GETTING GRIFFEY! ;)

Oh trade deadline, you've grabbed my again.

You're probably busy now Bruce, but is there a reason Soto isn't getting a shot? Any chance we'll see him up again before Sept?

Let's hope Murton can play a bit now that he's up. I wonder if his defense improved out in RF due to him being acclimated there in the minors.

Sunday when I saw him in Iowa, he looked much more relaxed in RF. He was getting good jumps, covering quite a bit of ground and made some tough plays that looked like extra bases of the bat. He should be an upgrade over Floyd defensively.

A wooden cutout of Murton wouldnt be that far behind Floyd defensively.

With or without the wheelchair?

He gets the wheelchair, but one wheel doesn't spin... so all he can do is spin around in circles.

At least he can make ESPN's highlight reel then when he spins his back to home plate and catches it Willie style.

I know this is just mlbtraderumors, but I'd definitely be curious to know if Bruce Levine actually said it, or if the better Bruce has a take on it.

Unconfirmed Rumor: Cubs Looking At Griffey, Dunn

Didn't hear the report myself, but a loyal reader dropped me an email.

Apparently a recent Bruce Levine report for ESPN Radio 1000 had some interesting Cubs rumors. Levine says the Cubs might try to trade for Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr. Any deal would likely include Sean Gallagher, and the Cubs called up Matt Murton today to showcase him.

Any truth to anything in that report, Bruce? Did anyone hear Levine mention it or is that all just garbage?

Just thinking out loud....

Hendry wouldn't trade Matt Murton for Ryan Church would he?

I'd walk the 7 blocks to Wrigley with my pitchfork if he did.

They would call him up 4 days before the deadline to "showcase" him. Typical Cubs logic.

To be fair to JH (for some reason ;)), perhaps the Reds have told the CUbs they're interested in Murt. So then the Cubs decided to call him up. As a favor to the reds, not an unprovoked showcase...

If you're going to showcase a guy beginning on July 27 with the deadline being July 31, wouldn't you start him right away? I don't see this as a showcase. I'm told the Reds aren't moving Griffey and the asking price for Dunn has been set pretty high for any team that might want Dunn.

No way he's that stupid.
