Hes a free agent after the season right?

Twins are 9 games out, fadign fast, and chasing two very good teams.

He doesn't solve any left handed hitting problems (but his numbers against lefties are outstanding)

Even if we didn't resign him he'd have to be a Type A free agent.

Would fall into the defensive catagory to shore up CF...

What would you give?

I wouldn't be willing to give up Pie for Hunter, but I'd be willing to give up EPatt and a decent reliever or something.

mmm...color me curious...

what is BABIP?

and

ISO?

BABIP is Batting Average on Balls In Play. Basically average taking out strikeouts and home runs.

ISO is Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average.

I'm not a huge saber guy, so I'm not really familiar with ISO or RC/27

BABIP is Batting Average on Balls In Play. Basically, it's when you put the ball in play (i.e. not a home run or a strikeout), whether that ball falls in for a hit or not. Generally speaking, it runs around LD% + .110 or .120, depending on who you ask.

ISO is isolated power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. It's a basic measure of how much power somebody hits for, since slugging percentage is fairly dependant on how many singles somebody hits.

So Hunter looks like he has more pop that Jacque then...his ISO has pretty steadily been a bit higher.

I explained ISO below, but RC/27 probably needs some explanation as well.

RC stands for Runs Created. There are much simpler formulas, but the best one commonly used is

RC = [(H+BB-CS+HBP-GIDP) x (TB+(.26 x (BB-IBB+HBP)) + (.52 (SH+SF+SB)))] / (AB+BB+SH+SF+HBP).

That's pretty complicated though, so just for fun, the basic formula is.

RC = [(H+BB)xTB] / (AB+BB)

Essentially, RC/27 is runs created per 27 outs. In other words, if you had an offense entirely comprised of that one player, how many runs would that team score per 9 innings on average?

I chose to just read this part of your post, because the rest made my brain hurt.. :D

But thanks!

I do wonder though, why fangraphs.com doesn't have the option to compare by some other stats like HR or RBI...

No on the infield dribblers part. You don't get credited for a sacrifice unless you're attempting to lay down a bunt to move the runner over.

right then, please ignore my ignorance

It's quite alright. We all had to start somewhere learning about this stuff. I still don't want anybody asking me about the difference between SuperVORP and WARP.

Just don't ask Rob to tell you when to use WARP vs WARP3.

I still maintain that comparing Ichiro to other players in the AL this year is more important than comparing him to guys who played during WWII.

:D I was just pushing your buttons.

I don't think the board is very high on him, but I like him a lot. Most of the sports talk in MN thinks keeping Hunter is even more important then Santana. I disagree, but the argument for production 5 days out of 5 is more important than 1 day out of 5 is at least plausible.

His defense is spectacular. He does more than just dive into walls for a highlight reel. He's a high character guy and a great leader. Heart and soul of the team. His power numbers are higher this year which some would attribute to it being a contract year, but that's not how he plays and is more due to working on fixing a hitch in his swing this offseason. I think he could play anywhere in the OF, so he wouldn't necessarily block Pie from coming.

EPat is an interesting idea as part of an offer because the Twins aren't going to keep Castillo as they have too worry about $ for Morneau, Santana, and of course Hunter. If we're not going to play Murton then he might be a possibility as well.

I'd love to see him hitting 5 or 6 on the Cubs.
