Eric Byrnes might be an interesting option for a rental for CF and RF. Obviously, Arizona doesn't think they're out of it, but I would think they aren't going to make the playoffs this year. With all of the talk about Hudson leaving Arizona at the end of the season, maybe a deal centered around Eric Patterson plus ??? for Byrnes. At the end of the season, let him walk and get the draft choices.

Byrnes is a decent player, nothing more. Would be expensive to obtain, and probably wouldn't be worth re-signing. I'd probably pass on him.

I wish Hendry had just signed Byrnes when he was a FA. He's having a fine year for Ariz - definitely he's one of my fave players. But I'd worry that his current .863 OPS is a fluke, almost 100 pts higher than his career avg.

Now might be the time to try to trade for him, because Ariz tried and failed to negotiate a contract extention with him in the past few days (probably why you're suggesting this deal now?)

The Cubs need another masher in the OF. If not Byrnes I wish they would target Abreu, whose power numbers are steadily climbing after his early funk.

If he is in his walk yr and would be cheap to acquire (one mid level prospect and a single-A), I'd do it. He's probably a better option than Stairs insomuch as he is in better shape, can play all 3 OF positions, etc. Edited by RynoRules

He would be a nice pickup....if all things were equal. But he leads his team in hitting, .002 behind in OBP, and leading SLG outside of Mark Reynolds 1/2 season worth of ABs. He's clearly the D'backs best player, having his best year and probably will be the best bat available at the deadline. The Backs are gonna want a ton for him. Add in he's a FA and seeking a Juan Pierre like deal (5yr/9M per), and will be 32 coming off his first above average season......not a good idea to sign him long-term, which is the only way a trade would be worthwhile.

It would have to take a decent losing streak to knock AZ out of the race.

Well, maybe we can help them with that this weekend. . .

Byrnes has no arm in any OF position, I definetely don't want him.

No arm? That's all your going to base it on? Your boy Murton doesn't have a good arm either for the record.

I'm pretty high on Byrnes, but I may just be biased because I really like watching him play. If he comes fairly cheap(which I would assume he wouldn't given his stats) I'd be all for it.

Byrnes is a hard worker, both in the box and in the field. Unfortunately hard work doesn't equal production. We have one future spot open in the OF. That is RF. Soriano in LF. Pie in CF. Byrnes in RF is a joke offensively.

We'd be better off platooning Jones and someone who could mash LHP (plenty of cheap options available).

Agreed, yet it still is far superior to Byrnes.

A 2-position platoon of Jones/Byrnes/Pagan in CF and Floyd/Byrnes/Derosa in RF with the leftovers on the bench would be pretty productive. I don't know how much he would cost as a rental, but my original post mentioned let him walk and getting the draft choices. I wouldn't mind getting Stairs, but Byrnes can play CF and platoon with Jones which stairs can't do.

why has everyone seemingly given up on jones being traded?

because he has done well and has done well over his career, I still think we'll see regression to the earlier part of the year when he sucked.

Or maybe he was never bad to begin with? Maybe his numbers are now going back to career norms?

Nah that can be it, he just sucks.
