How this guy gets paid to write about baseball i have no idea. In an article about needs at the deadline he offers this gem......

Chicago Cubs

What They Need: Nothing

Center field remains a trouble spot, but the Cubs have enough bodies to play the hot hand and leverage match-ups. As for the rotation, Sean Marshall has settled in nicely at the back end, and the bullpen, after some early season fits and starts, is also pitching well. Jason Kendall's anemic bat isn't any sort of solution at catcher, but the Cubs are obviously done tinkering with that position.

So from this do we conclude..

a) he knows absolutely nothing about baseball or

b)his love for the cardinals and hatred for the cubs are both so high he can't be bothered to write anything worthwhile

totally unbelievable from a so called national expert on baseball. This guy makes Phil Rogers(trib) look like a baseball genius

He really wrote that they have no needs? They are on pace for just 84 wins. They are getting well below average production out of C, RF, SS and CF, and they can't use any help?

Do you consider .281 BA .341 OBP for a SS and .297 BA .370 OBP for a RF, well below average? Perhaps your standards are a bit high?

Look at the numbers. The Cubs are at or near the bottom of the league at C, RF, SS and CF in terms of OPS. It has nothing to do with high standards, it's a straight up comparison to every other team in the NL.

I still think they need to upgrade the offense. I agree with Dayn that it doesn't look like they'll do anything else with C after the Kendall acquisition. I don't see anyone available on the trade market, who could be considered an upgrade at SS. At any rate the team seems high on Theriot, and Cedeno is doing wonderfully at AAA. Therefore, OF still seems to be the logical choice to upgrade. I'm not ruling out another starting pitcher either.

Whats our RF's slugging? Thats why there is an upgrade needed

Wait, let me get this straight. According to Perry, center field remains a trouble spot and Jason Kendall isn't a solution at catcher, BUT we don't have a need?

'You know whats funny is criticizing somebody for lazy writing, and then misspelling his name lol'

I guess that's my english irony being missed....

I didn't miss it, and thought it was wonderful.

Cubs RF are at 285/358/355/713 on the year. The OBP is 9th best in baseball, but the OPS is 23rd, and SLG is only better than one team (Padres). If the Cubs had a Chase Utley or Carlos Beltran to knock out 30 homers from a middle-of-the-field position, this wouldn't be a problem. But nobody up the middle has power either.

As much as I dislike "Dyan," I have to agree with a lot of what he says here.

The Cubs certainly could use an upgrade in one or two places, but they don't have out-and-out glaring needs that absolutely must be addressed.

CF isn't great, but Pagan vs LHP, Jones vs RHP, and Pie in the wings isn't horrible.

Regardless of what the YTD production has been from RF, I feel pretty comfortable with a Floyd/DeRosa platoon there.

They could use a MI upgrade if an easy and obvious one presented itself, but the "Cajun Connection" has been more than adequate, and DeRosa solidifies this situation too.

Like Kendall or not, they're done acquiring catchers.

None of the starters is a glaring weakness.

Another BP arm is always welcome, but there's help on the way (Dempster, Guzman, Wood, Mateo), or already available (the usual suspects that have shuttled back and forth from Iowa).

So the bottom line is that there are places where they *could* upgrade, but not really any that they *must* upgrade. I guess CF would come the closest to a "must-have".

I'm not sure how Theriot/Fontenot qualify as "more than adequate. Even if you take out Izturis, Cub shortstops have been lousy offensively.

To be fair, you can kind of live with Theriot's production for the year from a shortstop. Just not when you've got so many other holes.
