65. Tyler Colvin - OF Cubs - DOB: 09/05/85 - ETA: 2009

Previous rankings: none

.306/.336/.514, 7 HR, 50 RBI, 47/10 K/BB, 10 SB in 245 AB for Single-A Daytona

.243/.254/.386, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 18/1 K/BB, 0 SB in 70 AB for Double-A Tennesseee

Colvin was considered raw for a college product when the Cubs -- with their only selection in the first four rounds -- made him the 13th overall pick in the 2006 draft. However, he's exceeded expectations with 20 homers and 108 RBI in 580 pro at-bats to date. The rather extreme lack of plate discipline is a problem, one that Double-A pitchers are making him pay for since his promotion last month. Colvin, though, could be a star if he improves his approach. The Cubs see him developing 30-homer power, and he could be an excellent defensive right fielder next to Felix Pie in center. I'm not sold on him reaching his upside, but he definitely has to be taken seriously.

77. Donald Veal - LHP Cubs - DOB: 09/18/84 - ETA: May 2008

Previous rankings: mid-2006 #90, 2007 #69

97. Sean Gallagher - RHP Cubs - DOB: 12/30/85 - ETA: June 2008

Previous rankings: mid-2005 #148, 2006 ---, mid-2006 ---, 2007 #125

121. Eric Patterson - 2B Cubs - DOB: 04/08/83 - ETA: April 2008

Previous rankings: 2007 #148

136. Jeff Samardzija - RHP Cubs - DOB: 01/23/85 - ETA: 2009

Previous rankings: none

Interesting note: Josh Vitters would have went in there at #60 had he signed yet (noted at the end of the article)

Colvin!?

Who else should be #1?

I'm not a fan of Rotoworld or anything, and Tyler Colvin has some glaring holes in his game, but I think he's a pretty easy choice for #1 with Pie graduated and Veal and Samardzija struggling this season.

ETA: Thanks for the link, rabidawg900.

ETA #2: Cameron Maybin all the way down there at #7!?

i wouldn't put colvin in the top 100. it's not like he's lit the world on fire this year. i would go veal, gallagher, maybe epatt, and then colvin. definitely agree that samardzija doesn't belong until he cuts down on the hits and starts striking more guys out. i don't think he belongs in the 150 either.

the cubs farm isn't exactly top heavy right now though. it's questionable whether they deserve anyone in the top 100 with pie graduated.

I'm actually kind of disappointed we don't have any prospects in the top 20. Sure, Pie was up there but other than that we really don't have top prospects that have superstar potential, maybe Vitters but it's too early to tell.

When they refer to previous rankings, when was the 2007 list given? And why wouldn't Colvin have cracked the top 150 if he's able to be top 70 right now? I find it weird that Samardzija went from unranked going into the season to top 150 now, after this awful start to the 2007 season. Did they just not list anybody from the 2006 draft before this season? Or were they really that pleasantly surprised by Colvin's season?

Colvin my ass. I can think of guys more likely to succeed in MLB than him not even mentioned of these Cubs 5.

Petrick

Soto

Blevins

Gallagher and EPatt should be ahead of him on this list too.

For those three to "succeed" they will have to be competent relievers in the big leagues and mediocre catchers (unless Petrick goes back in the rotation). In a prospect ranking, you have to consider ceiling too, otherwise it's really nothing more than a list of guys who are more likely make it to the big leagues.

I see nothing wrong with Gallagher or Veal being ranked ahead of Colvin (and I guess I can see the argument for Soto, but I'd disagree) but Petrick and Blevins are future big league relievers.

How long until Holliman becomes a top prospect?

Probably never, considering he's slowed down big time from his start and given his mediocre stuff.

I guess thats why i disagree with some of the rankings. 'Ceilings' i think are valued too much. Middle relievers hardly ever get any recongnition but yet have solid productive careers. And i wonder how much of this ranking has to do with his draft slot the year before. Many publications and people considered Colvin a reach, and now with a so-so year + he is 60? I dont get that.

Actually, it looks like he wasn't as much of a reach as a few teams were looking at him at the end of the regular first round and Colvin started rising up after last season in Boise (for example, BA rated Colvin the top prospect in the NWL last season after a decidedly mediocre season).
