I've been a big fan of Aaron Rowand since he played for the Sox and have proposed trying to get him for the Cubs only to be shot down by some posters. It is obvious that Pie isn't ready to play everyday CF for a contending team, especially with offensive holes at other positions. Picking up Rowand solves the CF problem and helps us against lefties. I would think he would be cheaper than many of the names being tossed around. At the end of the season, check on Pie's progress and decide to keep him or let him go for two draft picks. Maybe a pitching prospect and Eyre for Rowand. The Phillies already have Victorino and Bourn ready to replace him.

He's hitting pretty good this year so far after a couple of 'down' seasons. However, about three innings into his Cubs career he'll probably grind himself face-first into the brick wall hidden by ivy.

I'd take Rowand in a heartbeat!! It's gonna take more than a pitching prospect and Scott Eyre, though...

I'm not sure about that. Of course it depends on who the prospect is. All of the Buerhle rumors had "experts" speculating on Williams only getting a team's top prospect for him. I think it's worth looking into because he's a better fit and much less expensive than many other free agent rentals.

The Phillies are right behind us in the Wild Card race. Not a great record, but with the expectations that the ballclub has, I would think they would be buyers, not sellers.

Well as you alluded to yourself, the absolute floor on Rowand's value is two draft picks.

Two draft picks > a pitching prospect and Scott Eyre.

I love Rowand and the way he plays ball. Since he plays the beisibol the way he does, I predict he will be out of the game in 4 years if he doesn't kill himself first running into a wall. Probably in Wrigley Field.

Pie is our CFer. Just have to figure out a way to get him to produce....

Philly isn't out of it... why would they trade one of their best players?

Because it's Philly and they will end up being sellers and the fact that they have 2 guys ready to take over CF after Rowand.

cuz they ARE in it. They are incredibly pitching poor right now. They need arms arms arms. Plus I think Rowand is a FA (next year?) and are negotiating with him. Would YOU sign him to a 4-5 year contract? You could imagine them trading him to another team as a rental and then having him go into the FA market without strings.

They have a kid behind Rowand who is pretty good (Bourn), certainly an acceptable replacement.

I would not be at all shocked to see him move. I think he would be a v. good fit here.

Isn't buying high what we kill Jim Hendry for all the time?

no thanks to Rowand, he's due for a huge regression second half. I'd rather see him have it with the Phillies.

Hendry gets killed for buying high, for not spending enough, for signing cr*p hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, for trading away future superstars for junk, for hanging on to guys too long, for letting prospects rot, for pushing thier development too fast...

If Hendry has done it, he gets killed for it, not always for nothing.

Well said! I have mentioned and read possible trade targets and/or deals and everyone of them gets attacked by about half of the posters. Imagine if you were the GM and trying to make the real deals instead of all of us pretending to be the GM. This year looks to be a very bad year to try to make an impact deal at the trading deadline, especially for a right-handed bat.

If only Hendry had a young, cheap, RH OF bat that had a full year of good production at the major league level to use from the start of the season, he wouldn't be flummoxed by such a poor market.

:D and people wonder why we hate Hendry.

Gee folks, I didn't mean to start something here. My point was that all trades and decisions have risk and can be interpreted critically.
