Did a check around the Braves board, and there seems to be some sentiment that Escobar could be traded for a "decent" starting pitcher.

Marshall for Escobar? Then bring up either Guzman or Gallagher to start? I think I would like that.

I'd hope we could enlarge the deal a bit. Marshall + Izturis + cash for Escobar and Reyes or Ascanio.

You think Izturis could pull in Ascanio or Reyes? I like both (especially Reyes) but I really doubt Izzy would pull either of them.

I doubt Reyes, unless he gets bombed on Sunday while filling in for Smoltz.

Ascanio? I'm not sure. I'd like Harrison too, but I don't see them dealing him at all. I'd take Moises Hernandez as well.

I wonder if the Braves might want Fox and give him some time at firstbase.

I kinda doubt it. Not sure what you're hearing, but from what I've heard and seen, the Braves like Thorman but are giving Salty a try at first because he'll be better. I doubt they take Fox over Thorman, but they may.

I'm still mad at Renteria, but I'd love to acquire him if we don't give up too much.

If he were to help push us into the playoffs and hopefully further, I'm sure you could find it in your heart to forgive him. :D

I couldn't, he clearly wasn't thrown at, he got our starter ejected for no good reason and then punches Fontenot in the jaw. No to Edgar.

I could forgive Barry Bonds if he got us to the World Series. From what I've seen of Edgar - and I follow the Braves somewhat closely - he's generally an ok guy, but was pretty classless there. I'd take him if we could get him for something relatively small (and would prefer him slightly over Yunel).

Unless we're going big for an upgrade at SS(A-Rod, Tejada before he was hurt) or C(Saltalamacchia/McCann), I think we're much better served to give an extended look to Cedeno and Soto respectively.

Yeah, I said in another thread that if we can't add salary (ARod, Griffey, Dunn) I would prefer trying to add Lofton to center and try out Cedeno and Soto. Not an ideal situation, but the rest of the options aren't worth giving up young players for.

if the Braves were smart they'd trade McCann and keep Salty

I could go either way, McCann's only 23 and Salty's 22. Salty may have a little more upside, but McCann's no slouch and the Braves can likely get more for Salty. A toss up in my opinion.

No way they let go of McCann.

First of all, he's a local boy. He's a fan favorite and is good for the marketing department.

Secondly, he signed a very team friendly long term deal.

I think they'll keep both unless someone blows them away with an offer for Salty. In a year or two, they may revisit this plan, but for now they have two all-star caliber catchers.

Honestly, I think Andruw Jones is more of a realistic possibility. He has struggled mightily, but I can't imagine the funk will continue all season. He will be a free agent, so Atlanta would probably be willing to part with them considering his struggles. Pie could go back to AAA and work, slot Andruw at center, Floyd in right and Soriano at left. Play DeRosa everyday at SS. Cut Hill and bring up Soto and I think that's a solid lineup. I'd be willing to take the risk on Jones as long as the price is right.

I have been giving this Braves thing a long look. They have two areas of strength (Cathers and Shortstop) that we have a weakness at.

I would love to see a McCann/Salty and Escobar/Renteria combination traded to the Cubs. Now, this is going to be a pretty "pricey" deal in terms of what the Cubs would have to give up in my opinion.

First, the Braves have Thorman and Johnson at 1st and 2nd. Then they would have Renteria, Jones, Escobar at SS and 3B. Jones is not the poster boy of health, so Escobar is their "super sub". Diaz and Harris have not been terrible, but will they keep it up, and Francour is a fixture. A. Jones is sucking it up, and could walk at the end of the season. The Braves are only 3 games behind the Mets, so are they going to want to make a trade?

What would you give up to get any combination of those 4 guys. Take into consideration where the Braves are in the standings, and their future.

I see the OF as being a need for ATL and maybe some starting pitching.

Thoughts?

if it's salty and escobar, the braves are probably asking for hill, pie, gallagher and marmol

I was thinking Marshall or Hill and Pie to get things started as well.

No way do I trade Marmol...he is by far our best bullpen arm (at least right now).

I am struggling to decide if Pie is a tradeable in this situation. The Cubs outfield next year could be Soriano and ??? and ??? (Murton/Jones/Floyd/FA)

Would Marshall or Hill along with Pie and good minor league pitcher (Veal/ Petrick/ Holliman) be enough for McCann and Renteria?

Posted
I wouldn't mind parting with Pie if it nets us legit major league talent in return, but I'll admit I'm still sore from the C-Pat fiasco and have a general distate for left-handed, free-swinging, young center fields who wear #20 and play for the Cobs.

I'm weary of Escobar. 341 BABIP this year with only an 18.6 LD%. Add in a 4.9 BB% and hes sure to regress.

He did have a good BB rate in the Southern League last year, but that was all he had that was good. Other than that he was horrible and his BABIP was even above league average. His MLE was 232/310/293 according to Jeff Sackmann, although BP has it at 272/356/368.

Hes crazy toolsy and could be decent in the future, but if you look deeper into his numbers this year and last, I think you will find that hes not going to be the guy who puts us over the edge.

Good acquisition for long term? Sure

The extra piece of the puzzle who will get us in the playoffs? Don't think so.
