Teams are lining up to pluck away the top two members of the Rangers' bullpen, and Jon Daniels is in "listening mode."

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has the scoop: the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Red Sox, and Yankees are the top suitors for Eric Gagne. The Mets, Braves, Phillies, Tigers, and Brewers are focused on Akinori Otsuka. And the Tribe likes both relievers.

Benefits of Gagne: he can be unhittable and he'll give you two good draft picks after the season. Plus he seems to be finally healthy. The Indians, despite their interest, are not on Gagne's list of 12 teams he can be dealt to without his consent.

The benefit of Otsuka is that you have him through 2009. That's why the Rangers are more likely to hang on to him. Conversely, a team like the Mets would prefer him because he's not a rental.

Only if you don't have to give up much, Jimbo. Otherwise, we have more important things to deal with.

I want more offense

My thoughts exactly. Trading for a half-year of Gagne seems redundant with Wood on the roster.

Right, because Wood is giving the Cubs so many IP right now....

I don't think the Cubs need Gagne though; a hitting catcher and a RH outfielder with power (i.e., not Matt Murton) are the most pressing needs. I wouldn't mind a reserve IF that can hit, too. I can live with one of Theriot or Izturis for the bench, but not both.

And how long will Gagne last on the Cubs before he's injured again? I don't buy it for a second.

I bet the Rangers would want Marmol

It would be remarkably stupid to trade a solid reliever who will be under our control for years for a solid reliever who will be a free agent next year.

Sounds like a perfect reason for the Cubs to do it.

I wouldn't do it. I mean you want both Marmol AND Gagne in the bullpen. That would be killer! And I doubt Hendry would do that either.

To whoever posted the bullpen. Wouldn't this be better?

Marmol

Weurtz

Gagne

Petrick

Ohman

Howry

Does Elias penalize FAs in their rankings who basically only played 1 of the last two years? In other words, is he going to be a Type A FA?

If this move leads to the release of Scott Eyre, I'm all for it. If all we're doing is optioning one of our good relievers to Iowa, I'm against it. If it would allow us to trade Dempster and be rid of his 5M contract next year, that would also be acceptable.
