Money being an issue, I keep hoping that Hendry will find a way to trade Jones and his 1.5 years and $7M in a similar manner that he dealt Todd Hundley and his 2 years and $12M after the 2002 season.

Any ideas on that?

I want to say it was Dan Evans that was GM of the Dodgers, pretty sure Kevin Malone was gone by then.

You are correct. That's why we pay you the big bucks.

Izturis, Jones, and Eyre to PHL for Burrell. Gillick gives us the difference in Burrell's salary for next year so that the $$ washes.

That was a unique situation. The Dodgers had some guys they wanted gone because they were declining and overpaid. The Cubs had a guy that was overpaid and never that good to begin with. They just happened to need the position we had and vice versa. We took on more salary in one season to save money the next season. That deal worked because we took on all of Karros/Grudz contracts for 03. Had we waited til midseason, it makes no sense for the Dodgers to make that deal anymore because you're now talking about only half a season of the Karros/Grudz contracts. That's why I don't think you have an analagous situation here (unless of course you want to be on the Dodger end, which I certainly don't).

Trading mediocre players with bad contracts for other mediocre players with equally bad contracts is not really the best way to approach the situation of needing to get rid of a player (it's actually among the worst). The Cubs got really lucky that time, but I'm not betting on lightning to strike twice in the same place.

Jones will be dealt. It's almost a foregone conclusion at this point now that we are pretty sure Zell isn't nixing deals because we pay too much of his contract, and that Hendry almost bit on a deal that paid all but 600K of Jones's contract. He's obviously pretty desperate (most likely because of pressure from Piniella and Jones, himself). Probably, the team that agrees to take the largest portion of Jones's contract ends up with him, regardless of prospects involved.

You could probably have Woody Williams for Jacque if you wanted to.

I'm not sure who the loser in that trade is.

Both of them for signing those guys to their current contracts in the first place.

A very productive player for three extremely crappy ones? Why not suggest ARod if we're going to ignore reality?

How can he be productive when he's not playing? He's sat on the bench in six of their last nine games. He's hitting .205 overall and .146 since April 25th. If that's productive, then I apologize.

A trade for Burrell is an interesting proposition....Jones and a good prospect for Burrell might work. He isn't gonna hit 204 the rest of the year..I just think he needs some new scenery.

Funny, that's what Marlins fans said about Jones.

I'd be giddy if that would work. Unfortunately my innate Cubs pessimism tells me it won't happen. I really hope I'm wrong.

We would have to kick more garbage in PHL's direction (Eyre). Burrell is owed $14MM next season. I believe Jones gets $5MM next year. Besides, I'm not sure where you play Burrell since we already have a LF.

He also has a no trade clause. I wonder if he would waive it for the Cubs..if not he is a tool.

I don't see why he couldn't play RF. If the Cubs can add more payroll though, it should go for a Zambrano contract...first and foremost.

Burrell could play RF, I'd bet. Everyone in Philly hates him. He probably hates playing in Philly.

Too bad it would never happen, but if something like Jones/Eyre for Burrell were on the table I'd do it.

Find me one person on this board who wouldn't.

I think the Phillies could actually get decent value for Burrell if he would back off that no trade clause of his. He needs to get out of Philly, I have no idea was his problem is...Does he have some screws loose?
