Howry allows what, 2 inherited runners and 3 of his own to score, blows the save, and gets a win. That's significantly worse than a 0 pitch win, though I wouldn't be surprised if there was someone who had given up more runs in one inning and still gotten the win.

But hey, he pitched better than zambrano did his last game.

edit:oops, I mean zambrano's start 2 starts ago

WHAT? Did I miss something, or did you mean someone other then Carlos Zambrano?

I'm pretty sure he's trying to illustrate how stupid the W statistic is by pointing out that 'Z' pitched lights out and didn't get a win, while Howry was pretty much a disaster tonight and got one.

EDIT - But he did get a W last time out, so I don't know.

oops, I was thinking of his game 2 starts ago

(you know, 9 nnings, 1 run, a loss. I missed his last start. Nebraska is wide.)

Yeah, wins aren't always a great way to show how a pitcher fared in his outing.

Ya, I was right there with you. Thinking about the same game.

And this is why you should never look at wins to determine a pitcher's effectiveness.

"Son, wins and losses are how you judge a pitcher. I mean, Howry battled and got his team in position to win the game. That's what a team needs." - Joe Morgan

That's a bit more realistic!

'Howry could have folded after giving up those 5 runs, but instead he buckled down and got the 3 outs his team needed to come back in the bottom half of the inning and win the game. That is why he is credited with the 'W' in this one' - Joe Morgan

that would be a lot more effective with a one-armed man as a prop. (sorry, obscure arrested development reference. carry on.)

I arbitrarily award this win to Wuertz, who was the only pitcher who didn't give up 3 runs.

So, Wuertz has an honorary win.

In a land full of straitjackets, the one-armed man is king.

maybe it's a ying-yang thing. perhaps if Ensberg and Everett didn't strike out but were still allowed to bat, Howry wouldn't have had the 'L' hung on him in this game.

I just mentioned in the game thread, the pitches Howry threw to those first three batters were hardly ideal, but they weren't bad pitches at all.
