Penny Hardaway

Didn't read the whole thing but I'll be extremely offended if Rick Ankiel wasn't mentioned at least 8 times.

Jared Wright came up with the Indians with pretty high expectations, did decent his first year, and stunk except for that one year with the Braves.

Angel Guzman. Dude was supposed to be better than Z.

but 89 was a fun year (until that whole ending bit against the Giants, that is)

1984 was the year that still haunts me personally - that was the team of destiny with some veterans having career years at the end of their playing days and a mix of young exciting players. I still can't believe it wasn't the Cubs vs. Tigers in the 84 WS.

earlier this year i was in caesar's palace. i was with a date walking around the shops at the forum and the sports store there had steve garvey signing autographs just inside the front door at a table. the employee standing in front of the store trying to draw people in came up to me and my date and said "would you like an autograph by steve garvey?" to which i replied with my lips pursed like josey wales, "f*k no i don't want an autograph by that piece of s*t." garvey just stared at me from inside and said "cubs fan?" with a grin, and i said "f*ing right". he just laughed. even steve garvey knows how big of a hoax '84 was for the dirty padres.

That's hilarious - and even though I hate Steve Garvey, I think it's damn funny that like you said, even he knows how much the 1984 Cubs were robbed!

All four of the "Four Aces" drafted by the A's in the early 90's.

Van Poppel

Dressendorfer

Peters

and some dude with a Z for a last name

None of them amounted to anything really, I think Van Poppel was the only one to even make the league, but i'm not quite sure about that.

The Z guy.

Dressendorfer played a few games, too.

In no way is Penny Hardaway considered a flop.

didn't he totally fall off after leaving orlando?

I think he played in Orlando for 7 or 8 years. Then went to Pheonix and the knee injuries started. But for the 7 or 8 years in Orlando he was a top 15-20 player.

i didn't think he was in orlando for that long.

i stand corrected.

I grew up a Magic fan, and a huge Penny fan. We share the same birthday. I was very unhappy the day he was traded and that was the beginning of the end for me in terms of paying attention to the NBA.

Ran into Jim Essian once at spring training. He referred to him as Wight Smith because "there's no D in him. He's plain horrible in the field."

I think its a little early to say Angel Guzman is a flop. Hes still pretty young, and looked pretty good starting this year.
