The Cubs are so high on Vitters that if he is there the pick will almost 100% be him. If he is not there then we can start to worry about what they may do. (Doolittle).

I think they are strongly leaning towards Vitters, but I just don't think its set in stone yet.

Sadly, I see the Cubs brass split between Parker and Vitters.

Rumor has it Porcello is asking for way more than the Royals are going to spend, and they're leaning towards taking Vitters now... which leaves us with a damn high school pitcher.

So then we should end up with Weiters. I know we won't though. How very cub like that we were so bad in a very down year for the draft. I wish this was the 05 draft and we were picking third.

Batting-wise it's not a bad comparison.

Even though I don't want Vitters, he does have a nice compact stroke... i mean, he'll still be a bust, but at least it's more excuseable than drafting Ryan Harvey Part II.

Oh it'll happen. Vitters and Parker are too mainstream for Wilken to take at three. Hendry was at UVA's regional games. Why send your GM to a game to watch your potential sandwich pick?

Hendry was also at Parkers start. And Vitters personally worked out with the Cubs (and Pirates). Who knows?

I will be royally pissed if Wilkins pulls this again though.

I'll be pissed too. No surprise picks please, go with what the consensus 3 is.

Price at #3 would be a huge suprise, and one I will take ;-).

I think I've fallen for Parker in this past week.

He screams Ben Sheets/Jeremy Bonderman to me. He's small but loose and athletic. I like that he still has some projection to him, even at 6'1/6'2. He's got the fastball, fastball command, excellent mechanics/arm action, and a nasty slider.

I'm stuck on him and Porcello, which means the Cubs will end up pissing me off.

There's got to be somebody better than Doolittle available at 48.

NSBB: picking player X would be absurd, especially if player Y and Z are available.

Bud Selig: Oakland A's select player X.

NSBB: *crickets*

pause.....

NSBB: how could the Cubs pass on players Y and Z. they're so stupid.

pause....

NSBB: Billy Beane is such a genius.

Or you could have checked the reaction in the draft thread.

Why should he do that when ignoring the facts so clearly supports his agenda much better?

lol at "his agenda." unfortunately the claim you guys are making just isn't supported by what actually happened in said thread.

just look at all that scathing criticism.

Looks to me like most of the guys wanted high ceiling, high risk guys (and potential tough signees) with the sandwich picks (Burgess, Harvey). You know, guys Beane doesn't normally mess with?

What? No one said anything, like the vast majority of the picks made. I'm sure there were lots of picks that were glossed over that people would've screamed bloody murder about if the Cubs had not made. Where's the "Beane is a genius" that you said would be there?

looks to me like everybody flamed the Cubs organization for mere rumors about taking a guy that Billy Beane ended up taking, and yet no criticism was directed his way.

it also looks like there is an aweful lot of anger at the Cubs for taking an approach to this draft that is not unlike the approach that Billy Beane takes to the draft, and the founder of this board got flamed for even pointing that out.

I haven't criticized any other GM. I'm not going to criticize Beane, especially for a sandwich pick of a guy who was expected to go around there just because I didn't like his skill set and didn't want the Cubs to mess with him.

Wah? So any debate/argument is now a flame? Tim didn't get flamed.

A guy like Doolittle is probably a better fits for the A's than the Cubs though.

As far as I can tell, he's a good bet to make the majors and contribute something, the problem is he's not likely to be very good. And he should be relatively signable.

The A's system is all about maximizing value. What they don't want is a huge money high risk high reward kid sitting in their minor league system for 5 years developing. They need to keep churning out minimum wage players who can make the majors relatively quickly and hold their own.

Given their financial position, the Cubs can afford to take bigger risks on higher upside players, and they should. Although there's nothing wrong with going safe here and there to try and plug holes on the cheap, so they can spend big on real impact players and not bench players.

The "flaming" was about rumors they'd take him with the 3rd pick. They were unfounded rumors, but rumors nonetheless.

I don't see an awful lot of anger. I see some anger from some people who had strong opinions about specific players going in, but most of what has been going on is observation about the apparant strategy, and not necessarily blasting that strategy.

The biggest anger is about the apparant lack of available funds to really invest heavily in what was thought to be a deep draft.
