It's interesting, though, that in that story both Lee and Barrett use the phrase "as far as I'm concerned..."

That may be a reach but I have little trouble believing guys like Izturis, Jones and Floyd are very unhappy, as they all probably expected more playing time. And DeRosa was signed to play 2B every day, is having a pretty good year, and still has had to sit at times to accommodate Theriot. But I think they're getting close to settling on a lineup; Soriano/ Pie/ Lee/ Ramirez could be the 1-4 for a long long time.

That's sort of the problem you get when your GM is an incompetent dunce like Hendry. He ends up telling individual players that they are going to do this and that, when any sane manager is going to try to play his best performing players. This is why Lou brought up Theriot with the big league club, and this is why Theriot doesn't get the appropriate amount of playing time.

Jim Hendry has ruined our chances.

How does Theriot not get the appropriate amount of playing time? He's tied for 5th in the team in at-bats despite being (position players with at least 20 at-bats):

9th in OBP

12th in SLG

I don't mind him starting the majority of days now, because he is a little better than Izturis. I don't exactly see how he's not getting the playing time he deserves though-in a few days, Theriot will likely only be behind Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez in at-bats despite not being a good offensive player.

Theriot is hitting .266/.330/.337. Color me unimpressed. Theriot has 39 more AB than Izturis, who was supposedly our starting SS coming out of ST. Riot is getting his playing time.

I'd rather have Theriot in the lineup, at least he can drive in a run. Before last night's game Izturis was stuck at 5rbi for the longest time. 6 rbi total from your starting SS is totally unacceptable, even if you are Cesar Izturis.

at the risk of sounding like I'm defending Cesar, that's a terrible way to measure a player's performance

Agree. Neither player is particularly good. Izturis may have more downside, but Theriot has been pretty bad at times as well.

Unfortunately, this is true. But Theriot has the "gritty" factor to fall back on.

Not to mention a history in the minors of actually being able to find his way on base. It may not translate to the majors, but at least he has a chance of a decent OBP. Izturis is terrible.

I think Olney overstated the clubhouse issues... This is interesting:

Tribune

So Paul, in your last mailbag you ended one of your questions with this not so prescient quote "The clubhouse is fine." Care to amend your comment now that two more days of boneheaded plays has boiled over into clubhouse brouhahas and Lou's first ejection. According to ESPN's Buster Olney this clubhouse has been simmering with anger for weeks now over Lou's handling of bench players and the bullpen. --Brad Lenser, Greenfield, Ind.

No, I'll stick with my original answer. Buster Olney is a fine reporter and writer, but he has yet to step foot in the Cubs clubhouse this year. The only players "simmering with anger" over Piniella's handling of them are the ones who are not performing. Blaming the manager for their own deficiencies and crying over their cell phones to their agents, friends or reporters? Please stop the whining. You'll notice no one has said publicly that Piniella is mishandling them, preferring to remain anonymous with their criticism. It's "weak stuff," as Sarge Matthews liked to say.

In other words, the clubhouse is not fine. Just because he feels it's unwarrented complaining doesn't mean there isn't complaining.

How many teams that are 5+ games below .500 aren't going to have a few complainers?

It's probably idiots like Jones and Izturis doing the whining. You know, guys who really shouldn't feel entitled to starting roles anyway.

That's all fine and dandy. But just because they shouldn't feel entitled doesn't mean they aren't. If guys are getting pissed, and fights are breaking out, there are issues.

No, my point was about Olney, and other national writers, making comments about a situation they have never been privy to. He's never been in that clubhouse yet he's making a comment about the overall feelings of the players. Again, to state that the manager has completely lost the clubhouse is hyperbole. 4-5 complainers do not represent the whole. His "source" may have been someone (a player) with an agenda.

Also, I'm not implying that everything that Paul Sullivan writes is gospel. However, he spends time with the players, both on and off the record, and he's had no problem exposing problems that the Cubs have tried to mask in the past. If Sullivan felt that there was real dissension, he would be writing endlessly about it's validity.

What fights? Barrett and Z duked it out. I doubt playing time was the catalyst there.

Just b/c there's a little smoke doesn't mean there's a forest fire.
