IMO, Logan White of the Dodgers is the best GM in waiting.

Weren't you big on Antonelli before? Did you cool on him or did White just grow on you more?

Im an Antonelli guy. White's no different than, say, hiring Tim Wilken as our GM. I'd hire Ng before white.

Who's Antonelli?

I'd love to have Beane here, but didn't he turn down a truck load of cash from the Red Sox a couple of years ago? Why would he want to come here now?

My read on Beane is that he prefers the small mkt challenge, and appreciates that it comes with less pressure. Think about it - if the team ever flounders his job isn't as likely to be on the line, nor his head on the block (like Hendry's is).

then hire him and give him a payroll of 60 million

How would they do this? Lot of guys committed for a lot of money who aren't all that desirable on the market...

Assistant to Shapiro in Cleveland. Regarded as one of the top GM candidates out there. Relies heavily on modern statistical methods.

Sounds awesome. Pretty much guarantees the Cubs won't hire him. He probably won't even apply for the job.

He should start by calling Soriano names until Alfonso quits. Most of the other big contracts should be tradeable or perhaps even worth keeping around.

I have one last bit of hope because of McDounough. He strikes me as a sound business guy, so I'm hoping he will realize that this direction the Cubs need to take right now.

I'm thinking McDonough (sp?) might be out of the "Team President" role as it would largely be superfluous once the Cubs have an owner that isn't a corporation. I'm trying hard to think of another team that has a "Team President" as a barrier between the owners and the GM, but I can't think of any.

Actually you just copied my mistake. That's what I get for trying to recall secondary front office people from memory.

Anyone know/remember the name of the system that Antonetti and Shapiro created?

He won't be around with the new owner. It's likely they make no GM change until the team gets sold. Pray it's someone like Cuban who would hire a Beane-type of GM.

What gives you confidence that Cuban would go for a type like that?

If he's such a bright guy why did he leave Hendry as GM this past offseason?

Good point. To his credit, however, I haven't read anything that indicates he is giving Hendry much room for error either. Moreover, he seems to have implemented a no-excuses mentality that was sorely lacking for many years under MacPhail.

In other words, the jury is still out on McDonough, IMO.

Similarities in how he runs the Mavs.

So I guess we could expect 120 wins next season followed by a 0-3 sweep to the Padres in the first round ;-).

Because he was just an interim appointee?

If we're going to daydream about bringing in certain GMs here, why not Schuerholtz? He's done a terrific job with the Braves during his tenure and seems to have surrounded himself with some terrific scouts.

I really don't think a newly appointed interim President would have the clout to fire any GM.

Interim president perhaps?

You are probably right, Andy's ill-timed Hendry extension more or less guaranteed Jim would be back this year.

He'll likely retire soon and it'll be his choice to do so w/Atlanta.

As far as Logan White being similar to Wilken, that's not a bad thing, but White has been more involved with GM duties than Wilken.
