The WC has grown up. I remember seeing him play for Boise. Man, was he overmatched by NWL pitching at that point in time. I am starting to see why Mercedes is still in EXST.

Castillo has struggled a bit recently. This is his line after the 3/3 game: .233/.281/.389/.670, he was flirting with the Mendoza line last week.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Thump Cats 17-7

Iowa wins for ninth time in 10 games

By Toby Hyde / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs made their mothers proud Sunday, mashing their way to a 17-6 victory over the Sacramento River Cats. The 17 runs, 18 hits and 11 run margin of victory were all season highs for Iowa. The Cubs scored in each of the first six innings, and only once, in the third, did the Cubs score only one run.

Micah Hoffpauir got the Cubs going with an opposite field two-run home run in the bottom of the first. After the River Cats JD Closser launched a solo bomb of his own in the top of the second, the Cubs answered right back with a four run bottom of the second to extend their advantage to 6-1. The bottom of the order began the rally in the second. Ronny Cedeno drove home a run with a single up the middle, then Eric Patterson brought home a run with a bunt down the third base line, and Felix Pie brought home two more with a two-run triple down the rightfield line.

Iowa added an unearned run in the third. In the fourth, against River Cats reliever Shawn Kohn, Koyie Hill drilled a three run home run to deepest right center field to make the score 10-1.

The teams traded three-run innings in each half of the fifth. Iowa's Eric Patterson went deep leading off the fifth inning, his third straight game with a longball. Later, consecutive doubles from Mike Fontentot and Hoffpauir helped Iowa to two more runs. The Cubs then batted around in the sixth, for the first and only time in the game, plating four more runs.

The Cubs have now won nine of their last 10 games.

Game three of the four-game series is Monday at 7:05. The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive an Eric Patterson jersey.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Lookouts return favor to Smokies in 11-2 loss

Sevierville, TN – After scoring ten runs on Saturday night in a Smokies win, the Chattanooga Lookouts returned the favor on Sunday by plating eleven in an 11-2 victory at Smokies Park. The Mother’s Day crowd of 2,834 witnessed the Smokies fall to 18-17 on the season, but still remain in first place in the North Division.

The Lookouts took the early lead on this Mother’s Day thanks to a solo home run in the first inning by Paul Janish off of starter Kevin Hart (2-4). The offense continued for the Lookouts in the 2nd inning off of Hart, with Ryan Hanigan & Cody Strait hitting consecutive doubles to give Chattanooga a 2-0 lead. Hart struggled the rest of the inning, which was capped off by a Jay Garthwaite 3-run homer to stake Chattanooga to an 8-0 lead. Garthwaite’s home run was originally called foul, but after an umpire conference was ruled fair.

Manager Pat Listach did not agree with the call at all, and was ejected from the game after a boisterous argument with home plate umpire Brent Rice. Rice later ejected first baseman Casey McGehee after an argument at the plate as well.

Hart’s rough outing continued in the 4th inning as he yielded another 3-run home run to the Lookouts’ Marland Williams to make the score 11-0. Starting pitcher James Avery (5-2) took over from there holding the Smokies to just two runs in seven innings. Jake Fox went 2-4 on the day, and scoring a run.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs DH at Wisconsin

Grand Chute, WI –A game two walkoff homer by Andy Hargrove of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers gave the Peoria Chiefs a doubleheader split Sunday afternoon in Appleton . Peoria won the opener 8-5 and never led the nightcap losing 5-3 in eight innings on the Hargrove homer.

In game one, the Rattlers took an early lead against Chiefs starter Jake Renshaw. Carlos Peguero led off the second with a single and Renshaw hit Kalian Sams with an inside fastball. After a double play grounder sent Peguero to third, Kuo Hui Lo made it 1-0 with a RBI single to left. The Chiefs tied the game in the third with an unearned run. Matt Camp doubled to left with two outs and stole third. He then came home when shortstop Carlos Truinfel threw wide of first on a grounder from Alfred Joseph.

After a 58 minute rain delay, the Chiefs jumped on Rattlers reliever Steve Uhlmansiek in the fifth. With a runner on second and two outs, Joseph singled to right for a 2-1 Chiefs lead. Russ Canzler followed with a RBI double and he scored on a single from Josh Lansford. With a 4-1 lead, Wellington Castillo doubled in Lansford to give the Chiefs a four run advantage.

The game stayed 5-1 into a wild seventh inning. With Joseph at first, Lansford launched a RBI double off the left field wall for a 6-1 lead. Castillo then blasted his fourth homer of the season over the short left field wall for an 8-1 Chiefs advantage.

Renshaw had shut down the Rattlers for four straight innings and went for a complete game in the seventh. With one out he walked Leury Bonilla and Peguero hit a five footer toward third. Castillo pounced on it from behind the plate and threw wildly to first. As the ball rattled around in the Chiefs bullpen, Bonilla scored and Peguero went to second. Sams then reached on a 40 foot single to third and Alex Liddi doubled home Peguero. Jayson Ruhlman relieved Renshaw and was greeted by a bloop single to left from Lo. A bad throw back to the infield by Joseph on a flyout let the Rattlers cut the lead to 8-5. Ruhlman then struck out Ogui Diaz on a pitch in the dirt and Diaz intentionally kicked the ball away from Castillo. When the play wasn’t called, the Chiefs threw Lo out trying to advance to third to end the game.

Renshaw (3-0) picked up the game one win with a career high 6 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on five hits while striking out six. Ruhlman got the last two outs with one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Game two started much the same way the first two games of the series have begun, with Wisconsin scoring early runs. Chiefs’ starter Marco Carrillo walked the leadoff hitter Alex Meneses and gave up a long RBI triple to Truinfel. Peguero gave the home team a 2-0 lead with a RBI groundout to second. In the second inning, Andy Hargrove, son of Mariners manager Mike Hargrove, homered to left-center off the scoreboard for a 3-0 lead.

Trailing by three the Chiefs got back in the game in the fourth against Rattlers starter Steven Richard. Yusuf Carter led off with his team leading fourth tripled of the season and scored in a RBI groundout off the bat of Lansford. Russ Canzler then cut the lead to 3-2 with a long homer to left-center, his second of the season.

Peoria continued their comeback in the fifth inning and knocked Richard out of the contest. With one out, Camp singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jim Adduci knocked Richard from the game when his doubled to left scored Camp and tied the game. Joe Kantakevich came out of the bullpen and struck out both Joseph and Carter to end the inning.

With two outs in the eighth, Danny Santin blooped a single into left field off Jeremy Papelbon. Hargrove took two strikes before driving his second homer of the game off the scoreboard for a 2-run walk off and a 5-3 Wisconsin win.

Carrillo allowed three runs on four hits and a walk over 3 2/3 innings. Oscar Bernard replaced him out of the bullpen and allowed one hit and two walks over 2 1/3 shutout innings. Papelbon took the loss allowing two runs on three hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Gorman’s Pub Players of the Game:

WOW!!

What a game for the I-Cubs offense.

Pie really wants to come back and Fontenot and EPatt are also smokin' hot.

For a guy that is just barely 20 years old playing in single A, I like that Wellington Castillo is holding his own and at least showing some pop. If he can play defense and hit with some pop, he'll make the show (just ask Blanco). Hopefully he starts hitting more like he did tonight.
